Our house is full!Integration does not mean self-service, but living together and creating something together.
In my house, everyone had always found a place, and I welcomed every visitor with goodwill. I took care of my guests, accepted everything in the process, and took no regard for my own family. Now every room in the house was filled, my table always richly set so that all guests would feel at home. Yes, I even gave up my own savings to please everyone. The parking lot in front of my house filled with cars I didn’t recognize, and I thought to myself that there must be many people who think like me and provide for their guests. I simply didn’t think any further. One day, the doorbell rang. My parents stood outside and asked to come in. They were looking for help, for their house had once been filled like mine – with guests to whom they gave everything. They didn’t pay attention to how full their house already was, and had only one thought in mind: “We must help.” But their house could no longer bear the burden and collapsed. Now they seek help and are faced everywhere with locked doors, given small handouts that do not make up for what they had sacrificed – for a hardworking and not always easy life. I searched for a solution to help them too, because after all, they are my parents and have a right to a wonderful time in their old age. And then something came to mind. From then on, I closed my door to further visitors – the measure is full. Now it was time to speak with everyone, to shape a shared life with all under one roof, to give everyone the opportunity to provide for themselves through their own strength. I no longer had to please everyone, we learned to live together and even managed to rebuild my parents’ house. Some of my guests no longer live with me; they are now strong enough to build their own houses again and live in them. They learned to help themselves and drew from their experiences during their stay under my roof. Helmut Schmidt, former and still highly respected SPD chancellor, demanded a radical change of course in immigration policy years ago in a FOCUS interview. He said at the time: “We must prevent further immigration from foreign cultures.” For him, immigration was not an option as a remedy against an aging population. At this point, I do not wish to comment further – let everyone form their own opinion, with an awareness of our current situation in the areas of family support, education, healthcare, and elderly care. This is not about adopting opinions, but about recognizing deficits, resources, and more. Superficiality has no place here – now it is time to take the path that benefits everyone.
