The fight for peace and freedom allows no pause

On June 28, 2028, behind Erfurt, at the legendary “3 Gleichen,” not only a fire of remembrance blazed—but a warning fire of anger, concern, and resolute protest.

14 bridge-lighting teams from across Central Germany gathered there to send a clear signal against the current war policy. Among them: The “Zeitz Wolves,” who organize the bridge lighting over the A9 near Droyßig week after week, and the “Zeitz Rebellion Group,” which regularly positions itself on Thursdays on the bridge over the B2 near Theißen. Their shared goal: Peace. Now. Not sometime in the future. And not only when everything lies in ruins.

Yet, looking at the state of our world today, it’s clear: Peace in Ukraine remains a distant prospect. While people there lose their lives day after day, Western politicians discuss armament, deterrence, and defense spending—as if peace could only be achieved through ever more weapons. An absurd logic that costs lives.

Instead of negotiations, weapons are delivered. Instead of de-escalation, billions are poured into war equipment. NATO countries, including Germany, have decided to allocate at least 5 percent of their gross domestic product (GDP) to armament and military spending in the future. This means not only a massive increase in military budgets but also cuts—where it really hurts: in education, healthcare, and social services. In other words, for the people. For us.

Because someone has to pay these astronomical sums—and the interest on top. Year after year, billions of euros in debt burdens. Money that is missing in classrooms, hospitals, and pension funds. Every euro that flows into the military is one less for the quality of life of the population. Prosperity turns into ammunition. And peace? It’s left by the wayside.

As if that weren’t enough, there’s now talk of reintroducing conscription. Officially, of course, to “strengthen defense capabilities.” In truth: so that young people pay with weapons in hand for the mistakes and failures of their political leaders. They’re supposed to become war-ready—not critical, not peaceful, but ready to follow marching orders. Welcome to the 21st century!

But there’s also good news—polemically speaking: “The Russian” apparently wants to give us a bit more time. Just a few months ago, it was said that Moscow was planning to invade Brandenburg by 2029; now, this doomsday has apparently been postponed to 2035. Why? Because Germany will likely only have reached the 5 percent of GDP for armament by then. Well, if that’s not encouraging news! A bit more time to build tanks, a few years’ delay for the grand finale. The irony of madness.

Amid this insanity, peace activists stand side by side, with banners on highway bridges, with warning fires in the night—as admonishers, as encouragers, as the last voice of reason. They show: The fight for peace and freedom allows no pause. For while tanks roll and billions are burned, their fires keep burning—for life, for humanity, for a future without war.

And as long as these lights shine, peace is not lost.
