The New Public Education: Democracy as Assisted Living

Ah, Friedrich Merz. This beacon of liberal-conservative reason who repeatedly tells us what’s good for us. In a TV show, he recently gave us a glimpse into his educational ambitions – not into the party program, but into his vision for educating the public: Citizens should be “educated through higher prices for gas and heating oil” to switch to a different heating system. Sounds logical. Or, as the educator would say: If you don’t listen, you’ll have to freeze.

Merz does not see himself in the mundane role of a public representative – no, he is the class teacher of the nation. And the citizens? Of course, they sit quietly in their desks, heads down, having failed their CO₂ assignment. A six, repeat, buy a heat pump!

But Merz is not alone in his quest for collective character-building. Many other politicians, across all factions, seemingly share the same public education mission. Just think of gendering – it’s not discussed, it’s implemented, without any referendum. If you don’t go along, you’re out of the language kindergarten.

Or the great CO₂ moral education: Driving a car becomes a sin, eating meat an ethical derailment. On the other hand, military readiness – lately a desirable educational goal, which is now emphasized with pedagogical conviction in Sunday speeches. Suddenly, it’s okay to talk about conscription again, without turning red. In the past, that was called militarism, today it’s called the civic maturity test.

What distinguishes a child from an adult?

Quite simply: Children can’t choose their guardians. Adults, however… choose them. Every four years, a new checkmark on the ballot – that’s the solemn appointment of the next guardian, who tells us what we must do, leave out, and think.

So, this is “our democracy,” which is often praised. Not a system where the people rule – but one in which the people are disempowered. Of course, for their own good! Politicians know what’s right. And if you don’t get it, you’ll be “sensitized,” “transformed,” or – as Merz charmingly confirmed – educated.

The funny thing? Most people actually like it. Over the decades, Germans have become so accustomed to their political “parenting” that they no longer even realize they’re stuck in rhetorical kindergarten. Self-responsibility? Eww. Sovereignty? Sounds like work. Freedom? Only if approved.

Maybe this is the real German dream: Not the own home, not the car, not retirement at 63. But the security of being ruled by people who see themselves not as servants of the people, but as its headmasters.

And we? We remain the good students, waiting for the next educational kick in the wallet.

Thank you, Friedrich. Thank you, dear politicians. Without you, we wouldn’t know what we’re doing wrong.
