Ear Cancer – The Authorities Don't Want Publicity

As expected, there was criticism of the video recording of the Weißenfels city council meeting on March 20, 2025.

As already discussed in the article King Ekkart of Günther and the Cliques in the City Council of Weißenfels, I had a heated discussion with the city council chairman Ekkart Günther and his ladies-in-waiting (employees of the city administration) about the fact that I had to go to the spectator gallery if I wanted to record the city council meeting in audio and video.

My objections that the events cannot be properly captured on camera up there and that the acoustics are very poor, making it hard to understand much, were of no interest to Ekkart Günther or the city administration staff whatsoever. I was threatened with the enforcement of house rules, which would have meant that I wouldn't have been able to record the meeting at all. That's how much they care about public access.

Also, the fact that the spectator gallery was already completely full, and many citizens couldn't find a seat there, which clearly shows interest and makes video recording even more important, was evidently irrelevant to them.

I was asked whether I belonged to a publishing house or another institution. I suspect the reason behind this question was that they wanted to call a superior to put pressure on me – just like they likely do with other journalists when they insist too much on press freedom as enshrined in the Basic Law or report too critically (I know this from personal experience). A job loss could very well be the consequence. However, this is not the case with me, which probably doesn't sit well with some people.

Now, I received criticism that the sound quality was awful and that one would get "ear cancer" if they tried to listen to the city council meeting. A lot of it is simply not audible. And yes, I cannot disagree with that – especially as spectators in the gallery exchanged a few words, which made understanding what was being said below in the hall even more difficult or impossible.

With good headphones, you can understand most of it – though poorly – but much of it is still not understandable, and there’s a lot you have to imagine.

It’s Desired by the Authorities

I was told that this is likely intentional by the authorities. And yes, I wouldn’t disagree with that, because there’s no other conclusion to draw.

I would like to refer again to the applause of the cliques in the ranks of the city council members and the administration when I was forced to take a seat in the spectator gallery. It shows that there are evidently quite a few people in the city council who do not want publicity. They prove – foremost Ekkart Günther – that they don’t want the citizens, the voters, the sovereign to know what is being said in this body. It’s unmistakable what kind of “understanding of democracy” some of these representatives of the people have. They clearly haven’t understood that they are employees of the citizens and were not elected to rule over them in any way.

Last year, I already suggested that there should be new elections. I am not from Weißenfels, I don’t make the decision about that, and I am also not eligible to vote in Weißenfels. Therefore, it should be up to the people of Weißenfels to decide whether they will continue to tolerate people in the city council who evidently don’t understand democracy.
