Teuchern Doesn't Want Change? - Rebuttal

Full letter to the editor, which was only partially published in the Mitteldeutsche Zeitung.

Teuchern Doesn't Want Change?

Even Heraclitus knew about 2,500 years ago: "Nothing is as constant as change." So did the city council in Teuchern, which has been intensively dealing with the issue of the intermunicipal industrial and commercial area (IKIG) and has ultimately decided against it. But not against change, rather against an outdated, innovation-less concept pulled from the drawer, which was already rejected by the citizens in the 90s and again in 2010. Presented as a "flagship project" by the state and county, the IKIG is supposed to make history. With the help of tax billions—or, as they are called today, special funds—the plan for a massive industrial and commercial area is being rushed through by the city councils without thoroughly evaluating the sense and nonsense, the opportunities and risks. The castles in the air being built around it range from the creation of thousands of jobs, without sufficiently considering the shortage of skilled workers and demographic change, to the use of hydrogen technology, which, if at all, will only be economically viable in about 30 years. Structural change begins at the grassroots level by strengthening existing structures and businesses. Education and training, for example, would be two pillars to support local companies. Following the motto "business as usual," instead of focusing on the expansion of unproductive administrative structures for self-administration and self-preservation, we would rather establish a new purpose association or waste taxpayer money in the literal sense at the Naumburg Cathedral—excuse me, it was a special fund. Unfortunately, the district council of the Burgenlandkreis and the municipalities of Weißenfels, Hohenmölsen, and Lützen lack the courage for real change. However, Teuchern is setting an example—thank you for that!

Note: New Decisions Needed in Weißenfels, Lützen, Hohenmölsen, and the District Council

Since Teuchern will not participate in the IKIG, the intermunicipal industrial area can only be developed in a smaller form, if it is to be developed at all. District Administrator Götz Ulrich had already commented on this in the district council.

The remaining participants, Weißenfels, Lützen, Hohenmölsen, and the Burgenlandkreis, must now vote on a revised statute for the purpose association to be established. This would give the city council and district council members an opportunity to reflect on the meaningfulness of the IKIG and the criticism repeatedly expressed in Teuchern.

The federal government is eager to bring millions of euros into the region because the structural change allegedly must be pushed through because of these 12 CO2 molecules. Why shouldn't the region think about other projects and ways to strengthen the local economy and region? Education, etc., has already been mentioned. Who better than those who live here could know what the region needs?

Why not turn the region into a business tax oasis? Or an oasis of cheap energy prices? The already existing and still unused commercial and industrial areas would certainly be quickly occupied. How about a completely open, large brainstorming event where everyone can participate to collect ideas, which could then be presented to the federal government to be funded instead of the IKIG? This would also be true and actual citizen participation.
