IKIG - Future Opportunity or Money Pit?

Anyone following the press has likely come across the term IKIG, the Intermunicipal Industrial Area, particularly in the communities of Weißenfels, Hohenmölsen, Lützen, and Teuchern. Many residents of these communities have already formed their own opinions. But what exactly is behind the IKIG?

By now, the Sewig [https://www.sewig-blk.de/], the “driving force of structural change and economic development in the Burgenlandkreis,” has held information evenings in all communities to bring the IKIG concept closer to the region’s residents. The team, led by Managing Director Andre Zschuckelt, explained and conveyed the visions outlined in the feasibility study during various events.

But what can this study actually show us?
- Essentially, it shows what could be possible, what could be done, and where the path might lead.
Does this mean everything will be implemented as outlined?
- No. Because between “could” and “will” lie many factors, such as the will of the population, the approval of the city councils of the individual municipalities, and the willingness of companies to settle there.

The study currently identifies which areas could be developed for the industrial zone – and these are not insignificant. Over 400 hectares is a large area. Many residents are particularly concerned that these are agricultural lands. A frequently asked question is: “Why not redevelop existing industrial wastelands instead of leaving agricultural lands untouched?”
- The responsible parties failed to provide an answer to this question during the events. They stated that, as part of the structural change, old industrial wastelands would also be revitalized, but creating new areas for industries willing to settle is necessary.

Is the IKIG already a done deal?
- Definitely not. All four communities must agree, form a joint organization, and then approve the construction plans for new settlements. The path to the first groundbreaking is still long. What has been achieved so far is identifying where an industrial area could be established, its potential dimensions, and the conditions that would need to be met. Questions about costs, potential issues during development, and whether Germany (especially Saxony-Anhalt) remains an attractive location given the current economic situation remain unanswered in the study.

Moreover, the impact of a large number of new jobs on the infrastructure of the four communities is completely ignored. Kindergartens and schools are already stretched to their limits. They “function” because they have to, often without full staffing. Non-traditional hires are found not only in classrooms but also in essential educational institutions like kindergartens. A shortage of doctors leads to long waiting lists and correspondingly long waiting times. Shopping options in every neighborhood are no longer standard, and a significant influx of workers, who may also want to live locally, exacerbates the housing problem.

It remains to be carefully considered whether the IKIG represents a good idea and a major challenge for all four communities (and beyond) or whether it is an investment in a future that no longer exists in Germany.

On Thursday, November 7, the IKIG is on the agenda of the Weißenfels city council. It will be discussed in the public part of the meeting in the city council chamber (Am Kloster 1), item Ö6 (from 5:00 p.m.). Interested individuals are urgently encouraged to attend, ask questions, and show the councilors that there is interest in the future of the city and region.
