Getting to Know Migrant Communities from Weißenfels and the Region – Building Bridges and Celebrating DiversitySeventh Intercultural Week in Weißenfels with a Varied Program ![]() The Intercultural Week 2024 will take place from September 20 to 29 under the motto “New Spaces.” For the seventh time, Weißenfels is participating in the nationwide event that focuses on cultural and social diversity. With a total of 13 diverse events, including concerts, exchange meetings, theater performances, and the popular Neustadt Festival, the city of Weißenfels becomes a place of encounter and shared experience. Most of the offerings are free of charge. The highlight of the Intercultural Week is traditionally the Weißenfels Neustadt Festival, which will take place on September 27, 2024, from 2 to 6 p.m. in Neustadtpark. As usual, a colorful program with games and fun will be offered especially for families. The offerings range from a children's carousel and crafting street to face painting and a photo booth. For the first time, a giant labyrinth will be set up in Neustadtpark. The fire department, police, and paramedics of the German Red Cross will also be on site with their own activities. In total, there will be something to discover at 35 stands. The stage program includes singing, dancing, and sports. A Bulgarian children's dance group will perform, among others. Thanks to a cake bazaar, barbecue station, ice cream, and cotton candy, culinary needs will also be well taken care of. This year, the Intercultural Week also offers the opportunity to get to know migrant communities from Weißenfels and the region. The Muslim community invites everyone on September 29, 2024, from 2 to 4 p.m. to an open house in their club room at Tagewerbener Straße 34. A group of Bulgarian amateur actors from Leipzig will perform the play “The Three Brothers and the Golden Apple” at the Kulturhaus on September 28, 2024, from 4 to 6 p.m. Admission is free. Cultural enthusiasts can also look forward to the screening of the film “My Story” on September 25, 2024. Six women who fled to Germany from different countries share their life stories. They talk about their experiences during flight, look back at their early days in Germany, and describe their current everyday life. The film will be shown at 10, 11, and 12 o’clock at the Zukunftswerkstatt Mitteldeutschland in Nikolaistraße 38. “My Story” is a project by MISA Burgenlandkreis (Empowering Migrant Women for the Job Market). The integrative daycare center “Kleeblatt” of Integra Weißenfelser Land gGmbH and its associated Parent-Child Center demonstrate how valuable and enriching a multicultural community can be. Children from 15 different nations are cared for here. For this reason, the facility organizes the Festival of Cultures every year. The 15th edition will take place on September 20, 2024. From 3:30 p.m., there will be plenty going on at Müllnerstraße 22. Pony rides, a bouncy castle, face painting, crafting street, a life-sized foosball game, and many other activities are planned. The Art Discovery Tour on September 25, 2024, is also about signs of peaceful coexistence. Participants will take a walk from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. to the “Pillars of Friendship” exhibited in Weißenfels at the town hall, the medical center in Neustadt, and the vocational school. The sculptures were created in late June 2024 as part of an art camp by young people from Weißenfels, organized by the association “Work and Life Saxony-Anhalt.” Leipzig artists Jaro and Janek Seemann, who guided the youths in designing their works, will also accompany the tour. They invite all participants to an exchange on art as a political discourse. The Volkshochschule (adult education center) in Weißenfels is involved in the Intercultural Week with two events. On September 24, 2024, from 3 to 4:30 p.m., citizens are invited to an intercultural city tour (meeting point at Volkshochschule, Promenade 37, registration at 03443 3396800). Participation is free. On September 28, 2024, an introductory course “Oriental Dance” will take place. Interested persons have the opportunity from 2:30 to 4:45 p.m. to learn the basics of belly dancing and other dance elements. The participation fee is €12.60 (€8.80 reduced). Registration is also requested. The diverse program of the Intercultural Week in Weißenfels also includes the lunchtime music during market hours by the Protestant church community in Marienkirche (Sept 24, 12 p.m.), the free seminar “Safe at Work” at the Neustadt Office at Neumarkt 6 for migrant workers covering topics such as employment contracts, temporary work, wage payment, and dismissal (Sept 25, 2–5 p.m.), the open house day of the Weißenfels association GSBSI (Health, Social, Education, Language, Integration) at Merseburger Straße 36 (Sept 26, 10 a.m.–12 p.m. and 2–4 p.m.), the exchange meeting “Experiencing Diversity Together” of the self-organized migrant association “Colorful Voices” from Naumburg for volunteers in integration work and interested citizens (Sept 28, 10 a.m.–12 p.m., Neustadt Office), as well as the benefit concert “Confidence.Faith.Courage,” raising funds for the educational museum work of the Heinrich Schütz House Weißenfels (Sept 28, 7 p.m., Marienkirche). This year’s nationwide Intercultural Week motto is “New Spaces.” It’s about spaces for encounter and exchange that enable joint reflection, discussion, and coming together, or simply a place where different people can chat, laugh, and have a great time together. The goal of the event series is to create exactly these spaces all over the country to meet anew, get to know each other, understand one another, and network. With various offers and activities, the Intercultural Week in Weißenfels also aims to show how many exciting spaces the Saale city already has to offer and how rewarding and educational encounters can be.
