Sowing Together and Experiencing Diversity – Action for More Biodiversity on August 21, 2024, at the Flower Meadows in Front of the Town Hall

The two green spaces in front of the Zeitz town hall have seen better days, one might think while passing by. The reason no lawn grows here is that the green areas at the Altmarkt and on the newly designed space at Kalktor are being gradually transformed into long-lasting wildflower meadows in several stages.

Creating wildflower meadows in urban areas is an important step as part of structural change to increase the attractiveness of the former lignite mining regions as places to live, work, and settle. By enhancing these green spaces, not only is the cityscape beautified, but valuable habitats for insects and other animals are also created. Wild plants are unbeatable because they cope well with the higher temperatures in city centers and are a driving force for increased biodiversity.

The city of Zeitz is supported and advised in this by staff from the “KompetenzGrün” project at Anhalt University of Applied Sciences. KompetenzGrün stands for building a competence center and a network of actors to integrate green infrastructure in Saxony-Anhalt. A bulky term with positive effects on the sustainable development and ecological enhancement of our region. The project aims to develop areas that serve as demonstrators for climate-resilient and biodiversity-promoting green infrastructure. They show how urban spaces can be used sustainably while simultaneously protecting the environment.

After the areas were prepared for sowing over several weeks through milling, the time has finally come on Wednesday, August 21: the area in front of Zeitz town hall will receive its wildflower seed. This is linked to an event by Anhalt University, in which everyone can participate. From 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM, university staff will be on site to inform citizens at a project stand with plenty of information about the initiative and to answer questions about how such facilities can be realized independently.

Following a short lecture on biodiversity starting around 9:30 AM, the specially composed wildflower seed mix will be sown, and interested people are welcome to join in. The currently still bare area was milled twice on behalf of the city of Zeitz in advance. “First, we prepare the seed together, sow it, and additionally plant wild plants,” explains Dr. Karina Engst from the KompetenzGrün project at Anhalt University. She adds there is a lot to consider: “For a sustainable effect, the area must be properly prepared and maintained. Also, the seed must be matched to the site and climatic conditions and sown correctly.”

Anyone wanting to learn more about creating wildflower meadows and biodiversity in their own garden or who wants to take regional seed with them can do so at the Anhalt University info stand. The KompetenzGrün team also provides information about other green spaces in Zeitz to be enhanced and about the cooperation with the city. “We expect positive ecological and climatic effects from redesigning the green spaces. In addition, maintenance is less effort- and cost-intensive compared to classic perennial planting, for example when it comes to watering,” explains Thomas Suk, head of the Public Green/Tree Protection division in Zeitz, who will also be on site on August 21 to answer questions.

After sowing, the area will be rolled again before planting of young plants begins around 12:00 PM, in which interested parties are also welcome to participate. Besides the areas in front of the town hall, further green spaces in Zeitz will be converted into wildflower meadows by 2025 on Michaelis Cemetery and at “Am Kalktor.” These too will be accompanied by Anhalt University during preparation, sowing, and maintenance.

Zeitz is among the first cities in the structural change region of Saxony-Anhalt to join the “KompetenzGrün” network. This project, funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK), focuses on helping people help themselves for more biodiversity – from researchers at Anhalt University to those responsible for green spaces. Who has already joined the network from the districts of Anhalt-Bitterfeld and Burgenlandkreis and how to participate can be found on the project’s website: KompetenzGrün – Creating Value with Green Spaces. Now.

The city of Zeitz and the university look forward to welcoming many “green friends” at Altmarkt on Wednesday, August 21, from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM.
