German flag in front of public buildings a taboo break and symbolic politics of the far right?Speech by Max Schneller in Merseburg on May 19, 2025
Transcript of Max Schneller's speech As I stand here today, I ask myself why we even have to do this. 80 years after the liberation of Europe from Nazi Germany, there are once again people in our parliaments who are radically shifting the boundaries of what can be said. They create scapegoats and incite hatred against those who don't align with them. Is that really what we want? In moments like these, I often think of people like Margot Friedländer, who reminded us of “Never again!” — and rightfully so! Dear Margot Friedländer, we value your tireless commitment to keeping alive the memory of what happened to you, your family, and so many others. It is our duty to carry on this legacy in your name. And when I say this here today, it tears me apart that so many apparently fail to see it. When the CDU in our district council sides with a motion from the AfD to fly the national flag at schools and public buildings, that is an outrageous violation of a taboo. Next year is the state election. And I already know that the CDU will once again drop its phony anti-AfD campaign just like in 2021. All I can say is: Watch out for the grandparent scam! Don’t let them fool you! The CDU is not a firewall against the far right — and it never will be. So it no longer surprises me that certain CDU district council members are openly calling for cooperation with the AfD. Christoph Schulze from the CDU, who, by the way, is calling for a new approach to dealing with the AfD, writes on his Facebook page that this is about a “calm handling of national symbols.” Calm? Really? Hans-Thomas Tillschneider commented on Schulze's post: “And no EU rag! Solid!” That’s the tone you endorse with your support — and that’s the kind of society you’re inviting in. I ask: What is the benefit? What do we gain if a German flag is flown in front of every school in the Saalekreis? Will classes improve? Will the buildings be renovated? Will teachers be paid better? No! It’s nothing but symbolic politics — and specifically, the symbolic politics of the far right. That’s why I say this to the CDU: Your lack of backbone is well known. But damn it, this is about decency — and you don’t support a motion coming from a party that is officially classified as right-wing extremist. And if you no longer possess that decency, then I have to state here: You have left the democratic center. And yes, that means you’re now included in our call for “No platform for fascists.” As I said in Halle: There is no alternative to our freedom. There is no alternative to our democracy. There is no alternative to Article 1 of our Constitution — human dignity. And there is no Alternative for Germany. All of us standing here today are the bulwark against the enemies of our democracy. And we stand in solidarity with all those who experience the hatred of the AfD firsthand. Queer people, people with a migration background, people who are ill, people with religious affiliations — they are people like you and me. And to them, I say clearly: You are not alone. And you will always have our support when it’s needed. That is our responsibility in a diverse society. My dad is from Iraq. He’s one of the few people who motivates me to speak out loudly today. And that’s why I’m standing here — as a young person with a migration background. But first and foremost, as an anti-fascist. That’s why I say: “Never again” is not a cliché — it’s a duty. And it is our responsibility to make sure that proceedings to ban this bunch of nationalists, racists, and anti-Semites are initiated. We are the firewall — because anti-fascism is manual labor.
