For Outstanding Commitment – City of Zeitz Honors Five Citizens with the Volunteer Award 2025 during the Summer FestivalAt its Summer Festival, the City of Zeitz honored five dedicated citizens with the Volunteer Award 2025 for their exceptional contributions to sports, culture, society, and the common good. ![]() Photo: City of Zeitz A proverb says: “Volunteering is not work that isn’t paid. It is work that is priceless.” Priceless are the people behind it – more than 30 million in Germany alone, who dedicate their free time to helping others and strengthening our society. Some are rescuers in times of greatest need. They put out fires, fight natural disasters, or provide first aid. Others take on tasks in sports clubs, support people with disabilities in their daily lives, help integrate refugees, or are simply there when help is needed – or, to put it more clearly, when the need is greatest. Thanks to them, our society becomes more vibrant and warmer. But volunteering requires time, energy, perseverance, and reliability – and sometimes, it costs nerves. Millions of volunteers are willing to give all this. Yet too often, one gets the impression that helping others, this selfless act, is not valued highly in our society. Instead, we chase after the perfect image or consume news about crises and conflicts, because they seem more spectacular. The good, the undramatic work in the background is often ignored by the media – or worse, dismissed as pointless or unnecessary. The Significance of Volunteering in ZeitzFortunately, these people are not discouraged. Even if they don’t consider themselves to be doing something extraordinary and never demand praise or thanks, we should thank each and every one of them. They are selfless, and their civic commitment is a cornerstone of our civil society. One way to show appreciation is simply to say thank you and offer a smile. In 2015, the City of Zeitz established the Volunteer Award to recognize this often hidden but vital civic engagement and to thank all those who dedicate themselves to others, wherever and however they do so. As in the previous year, the Volunteer Award 2025 was presented during the Mayor’s Summer Festival. On the same occasion, the Clemens-Wittelsbach Prize 2025 was awarded, and the 2024 Sports Awards were held. In this way, volunteering and the people behind it were placed at the center of attention. Against a breathtaking backdrop and in front of a large audience, the Volunteer Award 2025 was presented to five committed citizens of Zeitz, along with an entry in the city’s guest book, at Moritzburg Castle Park. The award winners received sustained applause from guests from politics, business, administration, and society for their diverse engagement. “We simply want to say thank you and honor the people who dedicate much time and energy to support others and help in many different life situations. We want to show appreciation for those who care for the common good, preserve our history, and dedicate themselves to protecting art and culture. This outstanding commitment deserves our respect and highest recognition. I am grateful, as Mayor of Zeitz, to thank some of these volunteers today and present them with the Volunteer Award 2025,” said Mayor Christian Thieme at the ceremony. The Award Winners 2025Jörg BöhmeFor over 30 years, Jörg Böhme has been an active member of the martial arts association “Jodan Kamae” Zeitz e.V. (KSG) and, since 1999, has also served as deputy chairman. Since joining in March 1992, he has shown his fighting spirit not only in sports but also in his dedication to the club. He has been indispensable in organizing and running tournaments. For example, he developed “Ju-Jutsu-Web,” a server-based tournament management system first used in 2005 at the “President’s Cup.” The following year, the German Ju-Jutsu Federation adopted the program, and it has since been used at both national and international tournaments, including European and World Championships. Thanks to his efforts, the “President’s Cup” – originally created on a whim – grew into the largest Ju-Jutsu competition in Eastern Germany. Today, it hosts more than 20 clubs and over 150 athletes from across Germany and the Czech Republic. In addition, Jörg Böhme is a referee with state and national licenses, deputy chairman, treasurer, coach in both recreational and competitive sports, holder of the 2nd Dan in Ju-Jutsu, and a member of the tournament organization team at national and international competitions. He played a key role in helping KSG earn the “Seal of Quality for Prevention and Child Protection in Sports” and the “Family-Friendly Sports Club” award. In 2016, he was honored with the “Silver Badge of Honor” by the Sports Federation of Saxony-Anhalt. “Dear Jörg Böhme, I don’t know how you manage to juggle all these activities, but I thank you for your dedication to sport, the club, and the people who make it what it is. It is my honor and pleasure to present you with the Volunteer Award of the City of Zeitz 2025. Congratulations!” said Mayor Christian Thieme. Even in retirement, she continues to contribute with passion – as part of the “Alliance for Diversity and Democracy Zeitz,” at the “reading roulette” in the city lab, or with creative offerings at local festivals. “Dear Margit Eisenschmidt, I want to thank you for your great commitment and congratulate you on receiving the Volunteer Award of the City of Zeitz 2025. I am delighted to present you with the Volunteer Award of the City of Zeitz 2025. Congratulations!” said Mayor Christian Thieme. Michael TrummerMichael Trummer is a coach and passionate ambassador of canoeing. He organizes training camps and school projects, offering valuable experiences that draw children away from screens and into active lifestyles. His values – team spirit, respect, and responsibility – shape not only the club but the community at large. In addition to his voluntary work, he was a successful competitive athlete: an Olympic participant in 1992 (9th place) and 1996 (4th place), and a medalist at World and European Championships. “Dear Michael Trummer, thank you for your outstanding dedication.
