10 Kindergartens Blown Up Every Day

The demonstration in Weißenfels on July 23, 2025, which by now had nearly 550 attendees, really made me think.

What was presented were the costs of this war in Ukraine – including the expenses for a Patriot air defense system. That system alone comes with a price tag of around 400 million US dollars (currently about 350 million euros).

But of course, the system alone doesn't cut it. It also requires Patriot missiles – and those are anything but cheap. Depending on the model, one missile can cost up to 3.5 million euros.

I asked myself how much it typically costs to build a kindergarten building. And I arrived at a similar figure: around 3.5 million euros.

I was also curious how many Patriot missiles are fired daily in Ukraine. There are no exact numbers, but one estimate suggests it’s about ten missiles per day.

Converted into costs, that means that every day the equivalent of ten kindergartens is blown up – at least in financial terms. That’s 3,650 kindergartens per year.

Germany has roughly 60,000 kindergartens. Since the political refusal to end the war in Ukraine, the same amount of money could have been used to newly build or excellently renovate about one-sixth of all kindergartens in the country.

And so the inevitable question arises: What might matter more to the population – kindergartens or missiles? But luckily, the beloved leaders in our governments know exactly what we, the citizens, the sovereign, truly desire – missiles. Missiles that are fired within minutes to strike a target – and in doing so, destroy themselves as well, meaning the destruction of 3.5 million euros of value. That’s how cynical it can be.
