245,000 Euros Invested in the Kayna Multigenerational Playground - Now Ready for Romping, Climbing, and Playing

There has never been a public playground in Kayna where the village’s children could let off steam. Therefore, the city of Zeitz’s playground concept, developed by the city administration and approved by the city council, laid the necessary groundwork.

In short, Kayna needed a playground. However, funding applications were rejected for years until Mayor Christian Thieme intervened, and a suitable program was found, ultimately leading to the successful approval of funding.

A suitable location was quickly identified, as the village council had already designated two plots for this purpose years ago. However, it turned out that the site was unsuitable, as scientific findings revealed it to be the location of the main castle of the Burgward, the Hohenstaufen Palatinate, and the later Kayna Castle. The site in Kayna is of particular historical, regional, and scientific significance because it is the only main castle of a Staufen royal palatinate that has not been built over in modern times, making it an outstanding, still visible archaeological cultural monument. As a result, the playground could not be built there.

Additionally, the approved funding could only be used for the specific site indicated in the application. Since the designated area was unusable and the alternative site constituted a subsequent change, the application was ultimately rejected again due to non-compliance with equal opportunity principles.

Undeterred, a suitable site for the new playground was found in the Mönchshohle, not far from the primary school and kindergarten, which was also selected by the village council. Furthermore, employees from the Public Green Spaces/Tree Protection department, responsible for Zeitz’s playgrounds, submitted another funding application for the playground construction. After the funds were approved, the tender was issued, and planning began, allowing the construction of the new playground to finally start in April 2025.

The motto of the newly created multigenerational playground is: “At Barbarossa’s Royal Court,” which is reflected, though not fully represented, by a defensive tower with a suspension bridge. Approximately 116,000 euros were spent on playground equipment, including a tower with a suspension bridge to overcome the height difference, connecting paths to a second tower with a stainless steel slide, a balancing structure, a Barbarossa throne, a sand play area for the youngest children, and a motor skills and memory game for older generations.

Spaces were created for both large and small, younger and older users, catering to different interests, strengths, skills, and levels of mobility. The playground offers opportunities for learning together, fostering strength and endurance, balance, concentration, and flexibility. Planning and construction costs amounted to approximately 76,000 euros, which included setting up the playground equipment, fall protection, edging, and, crucially, the play sand required for a playground. Seeding and planting work cost an additional 4,000 euros, and the construction of the adjacent staircase with lighting was also carried out as part of the project, costing around 49,000 euros. The total cost for the playground construction at Mönchshohle thus amounts to approximately 245,000 euros. The project was funded by the Office for Agriculture, Land Consolidation, and Forestry South with grants totaling 149,517.38 euros. The remaining amount of approximately 95,000 euros was covered by the city of Zeitz’s budget.

After three months of construction, the playground was officially opened on July 22 by Mayor Christian Thieme, Village Mayor Jens-Uwe Rauschenbach, and Department Head Thomas Suk, together with the construction companies. The playground equipment was immediately tested, as the children from the nearby daycare center, after a short musical performance for the guests, wasted no time in taking over the playground. The initial test results were positive, and the children are confident they will spend plenty of time at the playground during and after kindergarten.

“The people of Zeitz, whether in the city center or our villages, should feel at home, and that includes creating the best conditions for families. Kayna is now a prime example, as the primary school and after-school care were renovated this year and last, and now the playground has been newly built, to name just a few measures in the village. I would like to thank my employees for creating something wonderful for families and, above all, for the children in Kayna, which ultimately led to today’s opening. This playground was long promised and particularly important to me personally. I am delighted for Kayna and its residents that we can complete another project and that the children will have lots of fun here in the coming years. What takes time is finally worth it,” said Mayor Christian Thieme at the opening.
