Suddenly, Everyone Wants Peace

Out of the blue, the message is now coming from all sides: “We need peace negotiations!” Trump had announced it, Merz is picking it up in Germany, Macron suddenly speaks of a "European security architecture with Russia," and even Zelensky, who once categorically ruled out negotiations, now wants to wait for Putin in Istanbul.

Yes, of all places, Istanbul – where, back in April 2022, a peace agreement ready for signature was already on the table – but rejected at the time. Why? Because they wanted to "defeat Russia." Because they believed it was realistic.

What has happened? Have they all suddenly changed their minds – or is this the late realization of a massive political failure?

The Propaganda of Invincibility

Just a few months ago, Western rhetoric was clear: Russia was finished militarily and economically. Sanctions would “dry up Putin’s war machine,” they said. The ruble would soon be worth no more than toilet paper. And above all: One could never and must never negotiate with a dictator like Putin – otherwise, according to the preachers of the “West of values,” one would be “betraying democracy.”

But now? That same “West of values” is pushing for peace talks – and urgently. Putin is expected to show up in Istanbul on Thursday to talk about peace. The same voices that torpedoed a negotiation offer in 2022 suddenly want peace. Why?

Reality Check at the Front

While a change of heart seems to be unfolding in the West, Russian troops advance further every day. The Kursk region is already back under Russian control. Ukrainian lines are crumbling – not because the West isn't supplying enough weapons, but because there are simply no soldiers left. Mobilization reserves are exhausted. Ukraine’s young generation was sacrificed for a “victory” that was never possible.

And suddenly, even political leaders are starting to realize: Without the U.S. – which under Trump will likely send no more shell casings – Europe is on its own. And that means: Feeding Ukraine – militarily, economically, socially – is a bottomless pit. And a pit that’s already empty.

The Price of Arrogance

Why not make peace already in April 2022? Why did hundreds of thousands have to die, cities be destroyed, millions be displaced – only to end up negotiating with Putin after all?

Perhaps because they basked in their own moral superiority. Perhaps because they believed the world could be reshaped according to Western wishful thinking. Perhaps also because war was a good business – as long as others were fighting and dying.

Not Suddenly – But Too Late

No, this call for peace isn’t coming “suddenly.” It’s coming far too late. Now that reality can no longer be lied away, now that the myth of Russia’s collapse has imploded, now that even Washington is backing out – suddenly, peace is back in fashion.

The question remains: Who will take responsibility for three lost years, for a devastated continent, for the thousands of dead to whom peace was denied out of principle?
