Divide and Rule – Max Didn't Get ItThere was quite a stir in Bad Dürrenberg. Usually, on Mondays, only those who have been demonstrating for years for peace, freedom, democracy, and human rights—strongly critical of the government—are out on the streets. But on April 28, 2025, there was significantly more action on the city's marketplace. Max Schneller, a left-wing antifascist, had taken heart—or rather his smartphone—a week earlier to attend one of these Monday demonstrations and share his opinion. In his view, these Monday demonstrators are conspiracy theorists, tinfoil hat wearers, and of course fundamentally right-wing. Unsurprisingly, this opinion wasn't warmly received. Still, Max stirred things up. And not only that – he and his comrades set out to organize a counter-demonstration. These conspiracy theorists must not be given the stage. Eight police cars and around 30 officers were present. Max thanked the police for ensuring safety. Or did he mean that the police protected the left-wing antifascists from the Monday demonstrators, some of whom carried peace dove flags or were even in wheelchairs? The fear that these left-wing antifascists seem to have must be quite intense if they think they need that much police protection from mostly older people. At first, I joined the antifascists to record their speeches. I am genuinely interested in what these antifascists have to say. After all, I too am clearly against fascism. It went well for a few minutes until the tolerant, diverse, freedom-of-expression-loving and democratic antifascists somehow realized that I don’t hold back on government criticism. One of the stewards approached me and told me I had to leave the demonstration. I asked how that aligned with their values of diversity and so on. He said he would call the police to have me removed from the leftist area. Apparently, that didn't work out. Shortly after, a woman stood in front of my camera with a sign saying that all Nazis are losers. I told her it made no sense to hold a demonstration for diversity, tolerance, and free speech, and then behave like that. She replied, if it made no sense to me, then so be it. I moved to the other side of the street. Max, mentioned above, welcomed the fact that more counter-demonstrators blocked the view of the speakers with flags and banners to better shield the protest. Everyone can draw their own conclusions. Some speakers came from near and far. Members of the Bundestag and state parliaments were present. I couldn't take away much substance from their speeches, other than that right-wingers, conspiracy theorists, Nazis, and the AfD are evil. They also find Friedrich Merz somewhat dumb. They no longer feel safe, and life is becoming unaffordable for many. But with the AfD, it would be worse because the AfD allegedly wants to abolish democracy. That the current situation was caused by those very parties the left-wing antifascists themselves support seems to have escaped them. It also seems to have escaped them that it is currently being made very clear that there is no real democracy in this country. Election promises no longer mean anything. The will of the voters, the sovereign, plays no role. Democracy means rule by the people. But the people – including the left-wing antifascists – have absolutely no say. The AfD did not bring about these conditions – CDU/CSU, SPD, Greens did... A pastor from Bad Dürrenberg also spoke. But he merely repeated platitudes, generalizations, and defamations. Especially as a pastor, one might think it’s important to reach out to all people. Well, apparently that’s not a must for pastors anymore. When the left-wing antifascist march returned to the marketplace, an antifascist woman shouted: “You lost the war! Twice!” She didn’t specify which war she meant. Why she shouted that at me, I can’t quite understand. I’ve never participated in a war. Divide and RuleOne can state that the political establishment has been very successful in dividing the left from the left. Most of the Monday demonstrators actually consider themselves left-wing. They want peace, freedom, human rights, democracy, self-determination, and so on. They see the problems in the country. Some have had hair-raising experiences with this so-called “rule of law,” which is why they are so critical and see things differently. But the left-wing antifascists prefer to protest against these government critics rather than the government itself.Max was invited to a dialogue. Max, the left-wing antifascist, declined. He publicly justified this with his prejudices. Bravo, Max. That’s exactly how diversity, tolerance, togetherness, democracy, and freedom of expression ... um ... don’t work! Maybe Max should look into some history books on the topic of Divide and Rule – Divide et impera. The Romans were already quite good at that. According to themselves, history books are very important to Max and his fellow antifascists.
