593 Reichsbürger in Hohenmölsen?

It was election day on March 30, 2025, in Hohenmölsen. The 8,069 eligible voters were called to decide who should be the chief administrative officer – also known as the mayor – for the next seven years.

The changeable weather invited people to stay at home, and exactly that is what 4,449 eligible voters did. The voter turnout was only 44.9%. Whether it was due to the weather or the choice of candidates remains unclear.

Hohenmölsen: Advantage and Disadvantage

I always say: Hohenmölsen has an advantage and a disadvantage. The advantage is, nothing happens in Hohenmölsen – the big catastrophes take place elsewhere. The disadvantage is, nothing happens in Hohenmölsen. Well, apart from the annual festivals and occasional events. If you want to avoid action – both positive and negative – Hohenmölsen is "the place to be" – the place you want to be.

Dark Clouds Over the Town

But on March 30, 2025, dark clouds repeatedly passed over the town. Was that a sign? An omen? A prophecy?

Of those who made their way to the polling station, 593 chose to mark their cross for a king. Are they Reichsbürger? Are they monarchists?

That very king – conveniently named Christoph König – had declared on numerous lampposts that Hohenmölsen needed a king. And not only that. Another slogan was: "Make HHM great again!" Just like that evil Donald Trump in the now evil USA has repeatedly declared. Are there connections across the big pond?

How much "greater" should Hohenmölsen become, and how "great" was it once? According to Wikipedia, in 1680, Hohenmölsen had 300 inhabitants. The boom began with lignite coal in the 19th century. In 1990, Hohenmölsen was at its "greatest" with 11,764 residents. After that, it declined. In 2019, there were only 9,717 residents left – despite incorporations. King Christoph wanted to bring the former district town back to that old size.

593 Reichsbürger and Monarchists in Hohenmölsen?

A total of 593 voters liked these statements. But should we, should the state protection service, be worried? Or should these alleged Reichsbürger and monarchists be worried? Are the bathrobes ready, in case the doorbell rings early at six – like with those Rollator-coupists?

Did the People of Hohenmölsen Miss an Opportunity?

On the other hand, what would be wrong with a monarchy? Like in Dubai or Saudi Arabia, just without the desert and sea, but with more greenery and not as hot in summer. Okay, down there they make their money with oil and gas. In Hohenmölsen, "coal digging" would need to be intensified with the remaining coal, as long as there’s still coal left. Yes, to pull that off, the Kingdom of Hohenmölsen would have to break away from the state of Saxony-Anhalt, which could upset some people. But where there’s a will, there’s a monarchy, right?

One advantage would also be that there’s no castle or palace where the king could have barricaded himself. It would have spread quickly: "King, we know where your house lives!" and the citizens could have gathered with torches, axes, and pitchforks for evening citizens' dialogues if things weren't going well or if the king wasn't behaving the way the citizens wanted. A regular chief administrative officer will always say that many things can’t be done because "they in Berlin" have set it up that way. But even the train no longer goes to Berlin.

The Dice Are Cast, the Crosses Have Been Made

Well, those who had made their crosses, decided mostly with 83.52 percent for a "continuation" with Andy Haugk. Surely, one can't go wrong much as a mayor in Hohenmölsen. And so the people of Mölsen can look forward to more relaxed years, unless decisions are made in Berlin and Magdeburg that ruin the joy.
