Stop the Construction of a Prison in Weißenfels OT Langendorf

I am a concerned parent from Langendorf, and due to the planned construction of a correctional facility (JVA), I am worried about the safety of our children and fellow citizens, as well as the value of our properties. Our quiet and peaceful village is not a place for such a facility. Elected representatives have known about the planning and implementation of this project for some time but have neither involved the citizens in the decision nor informed them about it.

Statistically, a correctional facility can increase the crime rate in the surrounding area (Source: Study by the University of Cambridge and Crime Research and Risk Management in Correctional Facilities, Federal Agency for Political Education 2018). This could endanger the safety of our children and also affect the real estate value of our homes. Furthermore, it would disturb the rural atmosphere of our beloved village.

Additionally, the construction of a prison would shift resource allocation in the region, as large sums of money would be spent on building and maintaining the facility. These funds could, however, be used for education, healthcare, or other public services.

Ecologically, such a large project is always associated with many problems, as it could lead to the loss of green spaces and the disruption of many ecological habitats. The sealing of valuable farmland is inevitable at the planned location. Deterioration in air quality and noise pollution are also conceivable.

In our opinion, the promise of creating 300 jobs is pure window dressing. The required correctional officers, as the name suggests, are civil servants. They will not be newly hired but merely transferred from other locations. Catering and laundry services are outsourced for cost reasons nowadays (see Weißenfels Hospital) and are cheaply sourced from surrounding areas.

Furthermore, it should be noted that a prisoner, according to §13 (1) of the Prison Act (StVollzG), is entitled to up to 21 calendar days of leave! How will this be managed? We see this as a significant security concern for the population in Weißenfels and Langendorf.

We urge the responsible authorities to prevent the planned construction of a prison in Langendorf. Please sign this petition and help keep our community safe and peaceful.
