Hundreds of Regional Politicians Are MissingOn September 25, 2024, people gathered in Weißenfels with only one goal: peace. “Creating peace without weapons” and “Peace is a demand on human reason” were the clear and urgent slogans of the demonstration. But what was actually seen? Not a single one of the responsible figures from the region. Neither city councilors nor district council members, no district administrator – only Grit Wagner and Christian Beschnitt had the courage or interest to show up. The rest? Vanished without a trace, as if the question of peace held no relevance at all. ![]() And one asks oneself: Do our regional politicians even want peace? Or do they just have more important things to do? Maybe there was a new speed camera to plan or an urgent decision to be made about which streetlight pole should be painted next. And a peace demo? Something like that obviously doesn’t look exciting on the calendar. One might almost get the impression that peace is not really a concern for our representatives. Yet this demo was anything but a gathering of boring do-gooders. The singer-songwriter Yann Song King from Dresden musically underscored the event, while speakers like Hardy, Grit Wagner, and Sven from Berlin clearly pointed out the urgency of the issue. Particularly revealing was Grit Wagner’s speech, in which she quoted from JuraForum and raised an uncomfortable question: “Who benefits from war?” She spoke about how war is often seen as a “solution” to economic stagnation and how those who stand on the sidelines and pull the strings profit. Hardy also asked in his speech: Who profits from war? Not the people, not the civilians – but those who sell weapons and wage oil wars. He impressively pointed to the countless US military bases spread worldwide like a spider web. Anyone who thinks war is just a historical accident is greatly mistaken. There are clear beneficiaries, and we citizens must finally ask ourselves if we are willing to continue silently accepting this. Sven from Berlin highlighted issues that will concern us in the near future, such as the introduction of payment cards for everyone – another step toward surveillance and control. One might think these topics are of such great importance that local politics should also address them. But no, our regional politicians seem to feel they are not responsible for such profound, existential questions. One might assume that especially now, as NATO is reportedly even running through scenarios for a possible war between the alliance and Russia, politicians would have a special interest in peace. Such planning is not done for fun or boredom – it points to real threats. Yet our local decision-makers seem determined to sit out this issue, hoping the problems will resolve themselves. Maybe they also believe the war is still so far away that they don’t have to take a stand yet. Or worse: peace simply doesn’t matter to them. Why care about the world’s well-being when you can just take it easy? Should they ever awaken from their Sleeping Beauty slumber, they might realize that peace doesn’t come by itself – and that silence at a demonstration like the one in Weißenfels is a telling absence. It’s sad but true: peace is clearly not a priority for our local politicians. Instead of actively working against the looming escalation and taking a clear stand for peace, they prefer to duck away. But we citizens have no other choice than to continue fighting for peace – even without them.
