District Heating Explodes!

District heating prices are skyrocketing. Our pensions are no longer enough – the savings are gone, and life is becoming unaffordable. Should we vegetate in cold, unheated homes while the government talks about a better future?

I don’t know where to turn anymore. The prices for district heating in Hohenmölsen have risen so dramatically in the last eight years that I can hardly breathe from worry. Over the past winters, which have been milder, one could have hoped that costs might go down – but the opposite has happened. Prices have more than doubled! I ask myself every day how we are supposed to afford this.

In the past, our pension was enough to live a modest but good life. We were even able to set aside small savings, a little money for emergencies, for the grandchildren, for the future. But now? It’s all gone. Devoured by the rising costs that roll over us like an unstoppable avalanche. What should we do? How are we supposed to survive when prices keep rising?

Our old car, which we’ve been driving for years, desperately needs a repair. But we have no idea how we’ll finance it. A new car? That’s long out of the question. In the past, we could still give our grandchildren a few euros, make them a little happy, invite them to the autumn market so they could buy something sweet. Now, we can’t even afford a small snack or drink there. Everything has become too expensive. And the restaurant we used to love going to for a nice evening? It remains empty now – we simply can’t afford it anymore.

I know that the price increases are caused by the government and CO2 taxes. But where will this end? How are we supposed to bear this? Twenty years ago, the Greens said that the energy transition would cost no more than a scoop of ice cream. We couldn’t eat that much ice cream, even though that, too, has become much more expensive.

It is constantly said that we should think about the future of the children. But they too have to pay these heating prices. So, what kind of future is this? A future in misery and unheated houses? Is this the new prosperity the government is promising?

I’ve heard through the grapevine that a member of the city council is considering disconnecting from district heating because even they find it too expensive. If that’s the case, what does that mean? Why doesn’t he fight for lower prices for everyone? Why only think of himself instead of the people who elected him? I find such selfish thinking outrageous. It’s as if we have been completely forgotten – as if we no longer matter.

It’s always said that the laws are as they are, and that you can’t change them. But that doesn’t help us! That’s not even true! These laws are destroying our lives, our security, and our existence. Why isn’t anyone changing these laws? Why isn’t anyone fighting for these crushing costs to stop? Why are we still forced to pay CO2 taxes and levies, which are then also subject to VAT? We are paying taxes on taxes, and it’s breaking us. City councilors, mayors? Why are you doing nothing?

We were told we would have a secure and cheap heating supply from the nearby lignite. But what has become of that? There is no security anymore, and cheap is long gone.

I’m fed up with seeing how quickly laws are introduced, changed, or abolished when it suits politics. Why is no one fighting to lift this burden off us? Why isn’t anyone standing up to ensure that we can live a life where we don’t have to turn every penny? Politics promised to take care of us, but all I see is us bleeding more and more. If this continues, we will lose our home. The house we saved for, scraping by, so we could live rent-free in our old age. Should we have to sell it? This was supposed to be our pension plan, so we could live without rent. The exploded district heating prices are ruining us. What will become of us? Where are we supposed to go? What will be left for us then?

I am desperate, we are desperate. Something must be done before it’s too late – before we lose everything. I urge the city councilors and the mayor to ensure that district heating prices go down again. Push for the exemption of MIBRAG and the district heating company from CO2 levies, so we can breathe again and live.

Take care of it now!
