Historic House Is Far From Being Old Junk

When traveling through the Burgenland district and keeping your eyes open here and there, you’ll often come across signs reading “Heimatstube” or “Village Museum.” All of these places have been lovingly and passionately transformed by the communities into charming meeting spots.

However, only very few of these meeting places are actually used frequently by the communities. The town hall, the old parsonage, the manor, a hermitage farm, or—as in Röcken—the “Old School,” are places that collect and make tangible testimonies of the past. Whether sitting on old school benches or in the parlor with a set coffee table and liqueur glasses, the rooms were designed with much love and imagination. Besides a kitchen and two rooms on the ground floor, this charming gem also includes a “summer kitchen,” toilets, and the old schoolyard.

Unlike in other places, the Old School has been restored by about thirty club members and is used for events. Most recently, on August 18, 2024, young and old from the village and neighboring areas met here for a chat over coffee, cake, and Kurtibrause*—served authentically in small glass bottles with straws.

Visitors were shown the extensively renovated house, which has undergone a true transformation over the past three years. It proves once again that with muscle power and spit, lots of volunteer work, and above all respect for the historical heritage of our ancestors, not everything has to be left to decay.

It’s worth creating a new focal point in the village to draw out old stories for the residents with many exhibits—and at the same time to learn how people lived in the countryside 50 or even 150 years ago. Many children and their parents don’t know how to bake bread, how much effort went into making butter, how households were run without technical aids, and how children cared for the farm animals and a small stable. The “little farm” idyll is deceptive. And the school itself is something that only became child-friendly over the last 100 years.

While pioneers like Harnisch, Hentschel, and Jahn, along with Duden and Ries, brought order to the school benches content-wise, it was educators like Fröbel and Schreber who gave children space for their own ideas.

If you look around the schoolroom, you’ll surely find one or another item from your own school days. Class photos on the walls, excuse notes, report cards, class books, and even a skeleton point to learning contents of earlier times.

While the schoolteacher used to live on the upper floor of the schoolhouse and taught downstairs, things are different today. The “present” has moved into the ground floor: club rooms, which are also used for tutoring or can be rented for small celebrations upon request, are cozy and invite you to linger. The old teacher’s apartment, which had to be uncovered from many layers of linoleum and sauerkraut boards, now houses the museum (Heimatstube). Clay plaster and paint demanded a lot from the beginner restorers, but the result is impressive.

And the cake baked by the countrywomen, served today with coffee for a small price, definitely sweetens the visit to the Old Schoolhouse. Maybe it’s a little insider tip for you too. Events are regularly held there, and in September a flea market will take place in the Old School.

*Kurti is the mascot of the club and the school. He was a resident of the school who stayed in the schoolhouse long after his school years.
