Eric Stehr (The Left) and the weather vane in the wind at the European Protest Day for Equality of People with DisabilitiesOn May 5, 2026, the European Protest Day for Equality of People with Disabilities took place. On this occasion there was also in Weißenfels on the market a—well, let’s call it—event.
Eric Stehr (member of the Weißenfels city council and of the party The Left) had published a post on Facebook about this. You can see him next to a small flag. He posted the following lines: Today is the European Protest Day for Equality of People with Disabilities. The flag reads: Human rights are non-negotiable So that I am not misunderstood: In principle, as a father of a child with a disability, I think this is very good. However, I do have some reservations. If inclusion is to be advocated, then this must primarily happen in offices, authorities, and political circles. Because those who slow down accessibility—and actual inclusion—are sitting exactly there. I know this because I can draw on extensive experience that confirms exactly this. Inclusion is when it works anyway! That is, despite all resistance in offices, authorities, and administrations. Because inclusion is not wanted there—not when it costs too much money or when there are fellow citizens who are simply annoyed by it. Then, as a person with a disability, you experience completely incomprehensible resistance, even though the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities clearly demands something different. But nobody in those circles cares. The “inclusion-prevention administration” then likes to refer to legal remedies. These are long, arduous, and both social and administrative courts see their task as presenting the authorities’ views—with a lot of sophistry and hair-splitting—as somehow still legally compliant. I know this; I’ve been through it often enough. You have to be uncomfortable to get things doneIf you really want to achieve something as a city council member and member of The Left, you cannot avoid being uncomfortable. Really uncomfortable and really annoying. You cannot be on friendly terms with a mayor or district administrator. You have to keep putting your finger in the wound again and again. And yes, you quickly get labeled. And of course, you get pushback. A lot of pushback. It doesn’t happen directly; more often it happens behind the scenes, by trying from many sides to make your life needlessly difficult. I know this; I’ve experienced it often enough. If Eric Stehr needs a few tips and advice on how to become uncomfortable and actually stand up for a cause, he can just get in touch with me. I can help in that regard. Human rights are non-negotiableA great slogan. But here too I have reservations when it comes from the “left, anti-fascist camp.” Anyone who has not forgotten the wonderful pandemic years, and who looks at the contempt and hatred with which those who hold different opinions in certain areas are argued against, can only wonder what satire is allowed to do. I ask myself that almost every day. Because I am repeatedly labeled as “brown” or even “Nazi.” Why? Because I advocate for the rights of people with disabilities. Because I actually stand up for human rights. Because I actually stand up for the right to self-determination, for freedom of opinion, diversity, against fascism and against exclusion. But because of that, I have become uncomfortable—even for those in the “left camp,” because for the “diverse” people, the right to self-determination strangely ends when fear of viruses, fear of climate change, fear of Putin, and fear of other opinions becomes unbearable.Fight against the anti-inclusion blockersYes, of course! Always! But where it actually makes sense, Mr. Eric Stehr. On the market square it makes little sense, because the anti-inclusion blockers don’t pass by there. You have to go to them. You have to annoy them. As a city council member, that is at least possible through constant motions. A weather vane in the wind gets ignored.Application for vehicle conversion still not approved after one yearA little “tale” from the everyday life of people with disabilities. The application to convert one’s vehicle with a swivel lift seat and a ramp is celebrating its first birthday these days. After a rejection by the health insurance company, because in their view it is completely sufficient for a person with a disability to have a roof over their head, a toilet, a television, and a telephone, and to be able to move around outside near their home, an objection was filed. That was at the beginning of September 2025. The health insurance company has been calculating since September 2025 how many medical and therapy appointments there are and what is “more cost-effective” – transport service or vehicle conversion. That is probably not just how it works with us. Because people with disabilities are ultimately too expensive for offices, authorities, and institutions. Participation and self-determination are completely irrelevant if it costs too much money. Looking at current politics, it becomes clear why: tanks, drones, rearmament, and warmongering are more important.Let’s be uncomfortable together! My offer to be uncomfortable together stands. But I suspect nothing will come of it. Someone would have to step out of their comfort zone. One would have to jointly stand up for better inclusion and set aside disagreements in other areas. But there will certainly be quite a few who immediately consider “contact guilt” to be incompatible.
