False alarm over! Substance-Free “Carry On”: Sven Schulze (CDU) New Minister-President of Saxony-Anhalt

Those who feared that anything might change with the new Minister-President of Saxony-Anhalt, Sven Schulze (CDU), can relax.

His inaugural speech following his election on 28.01.2026 makes it clear how little substance Sven Schulze (CDU) actually brings to the state’s highest office.

He talks about a broad majority that elected him. But this only refers to the current state parliament. Considering current polls, CDU (26 %), SPD (8 %), and FDP (2 %) would only add up to 36 %. That is not a majority—even if two opposition votes went to him.

Schulze thanks his predecessor, Reiner Haseloff, claiming he brought the state “many successes.” What these successes specifically are remains unclear. Haseloff supposedly “set standards”—which standards remain equally unspecified.

In a retrospective, Schulze references his hometown of Heteborn, currently with 350 residents. Back in 1989, there were 455. He does not mention the population decline.

He states that the chemical industry in Saxony-Anhalt was rebuilt after reunification. That this industry is now in serious trouble goes unmentioned.

Schulze criticizes that the state government must solve problems it did not cause. Who the actual culprits are—federal politics and EU policy—he does not name. Yet CDU and SPD have been part of the government on these levels since the founding of the Federal Republic. So the problems were caused by his own party colleagues and coalition partners—criticism in this direction is absent.

He encourages members of the state parliament to bring the concerns of the people from their regions into the parliament. Immediately, one wonders: Haven’t they been doing that already?

Overall, Schulze remains extremely vague. Which problems he actually wants to address, which measures he plans, remains unclear. Instead, he diverts to side issues.

The Inaugural Speech of Sven Schulze (CDU)

Dear Mr. President of the State Parliament, dear colleagues, dear members of parliament,

it is a great honor for me to serve as Minister-President for the people of Saxony-Anhalt from today onward.

I thank the members of my coalition, the CDU, the SPD, and also the FDP, for this strong election result. Apparently, there are also opposition members who voted for me. My thanks go to them as well.

It is a good sign that we have a broad majority to start a new era for Saxony-Anhalt. This is good for our state, and it is also good for the people in the constituencies you—esteemed members—represent here.

I would like to address one member personally. Dear Reiner Haseloff, you led our state for 15 years. And those were difficult years—the President described it. But—and this should always be mentioned—you brought many successes to this state.

As the new Minister-President, I want to sincerely thank you for your dedication to our state. You set standards here and—most importantly—remained human throughout. That is remarkable.

Dear colleagues, in 1989, when the wall fell, I was 10 years old. I lived with my parents and my brother in a small village on the edge of the Harz mountains. 350 residents, a shooting club, a kindergarten, a local heritage association, a soccer club, a church community. Everyone knows everyone. All hardworking people.

We all had big dreams after reunification. But not everything turned out as we hoped. That’s life sometimes. Life is more complicated than one sometimes thinks. What happened in my small village, Heteborn, was similar to what happened to many people, almost everyone, here in Saxony-Anhalt. Whether they lived in a village or in the state capital, Magdeburg.

But then something happened that makes me personally very proud of Saxony-Anhalt today. People rebuilt our homeland here and made our state what it is today. It is not all perfect yet, it is not finished yet. But it offers very different future prospects than in the 1990s, when sometimes there was no future and for some, unfortunately, only escape to the West.

Dear colleagues, Saxony-Anhalt is not alone in this world. We feel the effects of global politics in every village, in every company. We often have to solve problems we didn’t cause. And every week, something new seems to come up. That is why I am personally grateful for my experiences during reunification. Back then I realized: If you persevere, like the people here in Saxony-Anhalt, if you are diligent, like the people here in Saxony-Anhalt, and above all, if you do not lose courage, like the people here in Saxony-Anhalt, then you can achieve great things.

For example, we rebuilt the chemical industry. And we revived the automotive supplier industry, where I personally worked for many years as an engineer. We now have over 60,000 medium-sized companies in this state, producing and offering good jobs. That is an achievement all of us in Saxony-Anhalt can be proud of. And the rebuilding of the state continues—even though we currently face major challenges—under a stable and strong state government.

And also with a Minister-President who works hard, perseveres, and even when the wind blows directly in his face, does not lose courage and fights for his homeland. That is my personal promise to the citizens of this state: You can rely on the new Minister-President, you can rely on Sven Schulze.

And, dear colleagues, the state parliament is the heart of our democracy here in Saxony-Anhalt. How we treat each other in this high house sets the tone for the entire state. I want us to have a good, fair, and open interaction so that we make Saxony-Anhalt stronger. I want to encourage all of you to bring the concerns of the people from your regions to the forefront. Because we need to know the problems and find solutions. This applies explicitly to all factions in the state parliament. And for me, it is not about finding solutions that work somewhere on TikTok, but solutions that also work in real life. That is what we are fighting for.

And we know: Our state, Saxony-Anhalt, is not the largest. And we are not the richest. Yes, we have always had to do a little more to succeed than others. But the citizens do this every day, when they go to work. The parents raising their children. The entrepreneurs running businesses. The police officers, firefighters, doctors, nurses, farmers, and above all the hundreds of thousands of volunteers and all the other people in Saxony-Anhalt who keep this state running every day. We are here for these people.

And my goal—and I want to emphasize this clearly—is that the state serves these people, the people in Saxony-Anhalt, not the other way around.

And I also want to say one thing very clearly. As Minister-President of this state, I expect respect for our institutions. I mention, for example, the ticket inspector on the train who does her job and is harassed. Or the emergency doctor who responds to help people and is threatened. Or, due to current events, the police officers who are pelted with stones and brutally attacked. I want us to treat all these people with respect.

And for us it is clear: Threatening emergency doctors and throwing manhole covers at police officers is completely unacceptable. And I say this today from this podium: Anyone who attacks our police or rescue workers will in the future also take me on personally.

Dear Mr. President of the State Parliament, dear members of parliament, developing our state further, enabling a good life for the people, more economic strength and better-paid jobs for Saxony-Anhalt—this is top priority for the entire state chancellery, I promise. And I rely on your support, the support of all factions.

Making Saxony-Anhalt stronger. That is my agenda. I am ready. I count on your support. Thank you very much!
