Joint Protest Against the Planned New Prison Construction in Weißenfels at the Weißenfels City CouncilPress Release from the Association of Concerned Citizens of Weißenfels and the BUND District Group BLK
The Association of Concerned Citizens of Weißenfels and the BUND District Group BLK jointly oppose the planned new construction of the correctional facility (JVA) in Weißenfels. According to current plans, the facility is intended to have over 440 detention places, employ around 150 staff members, and incur construction costs of approximately 400 million euros. In the view of the initiatives, the project significantly endangers public services and the social infrastructure of the city—particularly in the Langendorf district. The alliance partners view the impacts on medical care as particularly critical. A medical center with seven practice units was originally planned in Langendorf. Due to security concerns related to the prison location, this will now be realized not in Weißenfels but in Naumburg. From the perspective of the initiatives, this represents a clear setback for local healthcare provision and public services in Weißenfels. Furthermore, many parents and grandparents express great concern for the safety of their children. According to the critics' assessment, the security concept presented so far for the JVA can neither reliably rule out escape risks nor potential threats associated with day releases. Weißenfels already faces considerable social and infrastructural challenges today and has a high proportion of newcomers. Against this background, the Association of Concerned Citizens and the BUND District Group BLK raise the fundamental question of who will ensure the safety of the younger as well as the older generation in the future. The initiatives call on the population to inform themselves comprehensively, actively participate in the public debate, and critically question the planned project. They will have an opportunity to do so on January 8, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. during the public question time at the first city council meeting of the new year, which will take place at Am Kloster 1, Weißenfels.
