Just being against the AfD is not enough! Slogans are not solutions

Last Friday, September 26, 2025, the AfD invited people to a rally in Naumburg.

Around 500 people followed this invitation. In addition, about 250 people showed up on the other side of the Old Market to demonstrate against the AfD rally.

Some YouTubers were also on site and documented the event via livestream. Among them was Beobachter Live from Berlin, who positioned themselves right between the AfD rally and the counter-demonstration. While they had the bad luck of missing the speeches on the AfD stage, they had the good fortune of being able to engage in conversations with the anti-AfD demonstrators – which, however, was not quite so easy with the self-proclaimed guardians of the “firewall.”

After a brief chat with Christian Beschnidt, 3rd assessor of the AfD district board in Burgenlandkreis, and the observation that both AfD and anti-AfD rallies included many people from the middle of society, Sven (Beobachter Live) sought dialogue with anti-AfD demonstrators. He even managed a little with one of them. However, many current, pressing issues unrelated to the AfD didn’t seem to be familiar to the young man. Showing their faces is also something anti-AfD protesters sometimes find difficult.

Current topics for Sven include Agenda 2030, the digital euro, and developments in Vietnam, where 80 million people had their accounts frozen because the government there wants to enforce digital IDs. Those without one, or without linking their accounts to it, are excluded from cashless transactions. A scenario that could also be looming for us in the not-too-distant future. Citizens become increasingly transparent and are kept in check by the government through threats of economic ruin in case of “misconduct.” This is already happening today – as shown in the cases of Michael Ballweg or the sanctioning of journalists – but in the future, it would be even easier and could hit anyone at any time with just a few clicks or through artificial intelligence.

Rabble-rouser of the anti-AfD demonstration was Stefan Garthoff (Die Liste, member of Naumburg city council as well as the finance and procurement committee). However, no solution-oriented speeches could be heard in the livestream. The problems in the country were not addressed. Instead, it was limited to chants of “Scheiß-AfD” (“Shitty AfD”) and shouts of “Alerta-Anti-Faschista.”

One would think that Garthoff knows the problems in Naumburg, Saxony-Anhalt, and the entire republic – and that, if a demonstration is called, those problems would also be addressed. But as it stands, the impression is inevitably created that the mere existence of the AfD is considered the problem. Yet this party, since it holds no governing responsibility anywhere, did not cause the problems in the country. The question arises: Which problems would not exist if the AfD did not exist? This anti-AfD demonstration therefore appears more like a pro-government demonstration.

Slogans are not solutions

I could even imagine that there are indeed overlaps here and there between AfD and anti-AfD demonstrators. According to Facebook, however, anti-AfD demonstrators are obviously unwilling to go to the front lines.

In contrast to the anti-AfD side, AfD supporters repeatedly show themselves willing to talk. Sven (Beobachter Live) was able to ask Ulrich Siegmund and Martin Reichardt a few questions at the end of the livestream to learn their views on the country’s problems.

We have already recorded interviews with Ulrich Siegmund and Martin Reichardt. We would also gladly conduct such interviews with anti-AfD protesters – person to person, for mutual understanding, and to see whether there might even be some common ground in order to reconnect. Sven (Beobachter Live) also expressed this concern.

With this, Stefan Garthoff or his associates are warmly invited to send us an email in order to record such a conversation. Members of other parties, groups, and of course ordinary citizens are also always welcome to talk about issues and problems that are burning under their nails.
