Vultures circling over Tönnies in Weißenfels? – Anti-Tönnies Demo: Stop the Slaughter! On September 13, 2025, the announced Anti-Tönnies demonstration took place in Weißenfels. Numerous groups from Saxony (including Leipzig, Borna, Grimma) and Thuringia (Jena, Apolda, Erfurt) had traveled to attend, but from the organizers’ point of view, unfortunately only a few from Saxony-Anhalt and the Burgenland district.
After the opening speeches at the marketplace, the demonstration marched through Jüdenstraße, Saalstraße, Merseburger Straße, and Heuweg. From there, it continued via Tagewerbener Straße to the Märchenbrunnen, where a mid-rally with further speeches took place – also in Polish and Romanian, directly addressing the Tönnies workers. Many of them watched the demonstration curiously from the windows of the Neustadt, a residential area that unfortunately offers hardly any decent living conditions. The route then continued along Schlachthofstraße, directly in front of the Tönnies mega-slaughterhouse site. The entire event was accompanied by a large police presence, which, however, remained restrained and appeared mostly friendly toward the demonstrators. The demo was organized by the Animal Liberators Leipzig (see poster).
A speech by the BUND district group Burgenlandkreis, held at the demo: Dear comrades, dear friends, we, as the BUND district group Burgenlandkreis, stand here today at your side to send a clear signal – against animal suffering, against exploitation, against Tönnies, and against the destructive meat industry. What happens in this slaughterhouse is not an isolated case but part of a system. A system that operates at the expense of the weakest – at the expense of the animals, the workers, and our environment. First: the suffering of the animals. Millions of pigs, cattle, and chickens are killed in mega-slaughterhouses in Germany every year. The journey alone is a martyrdom: long transports across Europe, even in extreme heat or cold. Animals crammed together, without water, without protection. Many die already during transport. In the end, they face CO₂ stunning – a death struggle lasting minutes, during which the animals gasp desperately for air. This is nothing less than state-sanctioned cruelty. Second: the basis of factory farming. Such slaughterhouses are the prerequisite for millions of animals being crammed into barns. Only because thousands of pigs can be killed here every day does this industrial livestock farming pay off at all. Every new mega-slaughterhouse is therefore a driver of even more animal suffering, even more slurry, and even more destroyed landscapes. Third: the working conditions. The people who toil in these halls are themselves victims of this system. Contract work, low wages, lack of labor protection – that is the reality. People from Eastern Europe and the Global South are exploited here to produce cheap meat for the supermarket. While Tönnies rakes in millions in profits, workers and their families pay the price – with their health and often also with their dignity. Fourth: the consequences for climate and environment. Factory farming and the meat industry contribute significantly to the climate crisis. Methane, ammonia, gigantic amounts of slurry – all of this burdens our air, our water, our soil. We know: less meat means more climate protection. Yet Tönnies and others are driving exactly the opposite. Dear friends, we are here today because we want a different future: An agriculture that does not torment animals but respects them. A world of work that protects people instead of exploiting them. And a food system that preserves our environment instead of destroying it. That is why we are taking to the streets today – loud, determined, and in solidarity. Slaughterhouses like this one are not part of the future; they must be abolished! Thank you.
