Residents of Zeitz Want to Pressure the Federal Railway and Launch Petition for S-BahnAnd not just Deutsche Bahn – also the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport!
For several years now, there has been talk of an S-Bahn connection from Gera via Zeitz to Leipzig. The idea is that Zeitz would become a bit of a commuter belt for Leipzig, allowing those who work in Leipzig but don’t care much for big cities to move to Zeitz. And, of course, so that residents of Zeitz could get to jobs in Leipzig more quickly – since the S-Bahn would run more frequently. One might also ask why they don’t just run more trains that simply aren’t called “S-Bahn.” But that would surely only be a question for pragmatists. And lo and behold: things are happening! Well, the planning for electrifying the railway line from Gera via Zeitz to Leipzig is happening. This planning, which began in 2023, is set – believe it or not – to be completed by 2026. And – attention! drum roll! – construction is scheduled to begin in 2031, so that the ultimate goal – the S-Bahn – could start running sometime in 2035. Yeah, right?! But some residents of Zeitz are not impressed with this schedule, which could hardly be outpaced by the speed of light. They think it’s simply too slow. The Arbeitskreis Altstadt Zeitz e.V. has launched a petition – addressed to Deutsche Bahn and the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport (BMDV) – to stir things up. What an extraordinarily democratic move by citizens to want to influence affairs. Something you usually only see from government critics. In any case, these residents of Zeitz are demanding the immediate electrification and acceleration of the Zeitz – Pegau – Leipzig railway line, with a target speed of 120 km/h by no later than 2030. This Is Not China!!!Dear friends, we live in the best Germany there has ever been, not in China, where in ten years entire cities are conjured out of the ground and a project like this would probably be completed in a matter of weeks. In Germany, the former leader in technology and innovation, it’s not so simple to equip an existing railway line with a mere overhead line. This requires careful thought and thorough planning. Every wire of the overhead line must be certified and handpicked – oh, what am I saying: every single molecule of the overhead line must be perfectly placed. This takes time! Good things come to those who wait.Anyone who wants – or needs – to commute electrically to Leipzig before then, in order to generate tax revenue, can either get an electric car or an e-bike. The latter would be even more environmentally friendly. After all, the reason for the S-Bahn is the coal phase-out. And the reason for the coal phase-out is the noble goal of eliminating that evil CO2 from the atmosphere. To be precise: those 12 CO2 molecules per 1 million air molecules. And to be even more precise: those 0.216 CO2 molecules per 1 million air molecules that are of German origin. Explanatory calculation: The share of CO2 in the atmosphere is about 400 ppm or 0.04 percent. CO2 is considered a trace gas because it exists in such low concentrations. About 3 percent of those 400 ppm (parts per million) are of human origin – that is, 12 ppm. Or, to put it more illustratively: 12 CO2 molecules in 1 million air molecules. And of these 12 CO2 molecules, Germany accounts for about 1.7 percent (and falling), which is about 0.216 ppm or 0.216 CO2 molecules in 1 million air molecules. And this amount – so the media regularly tell us – is what causes global warming. The 388 ppm of CO2 of natural origin, on the other hand, are said to have no effect. Well then! Many billions in taxpayer money are to be spent – including on the electrification of the railway line, since diesel locomotives still operate there. Anyone who would also like to see electrification sped up can join the petition. It can be found at https://www.openpetition.de/petition/online/s-bahn-jetzt-elektrifizierung-120-km-h-bis-2030.
