Penitentiary for Mayor Papke – When Things Take (Too) Long Again

Some may still remember the saying: If the D-Mark doesn't come to us, we'll go to the D-Mark. Does that also apply to the prison (JVA) in Weißenfels?

In any case, it has been reported that Weißenfels’ mayor Martin Papke is getting impatient. He is pushing for a swift decision by the state regarding the construction of the JVA in Weißenfels and points out that building rights for this – as some cynics might call it: monstrosity at the city’s entrance – could be established this very year. In Halle-Tornau, this is reportedly not the case.

So, Mayor Papke seems to be craving a penitentiary... erm... correctional facility in Weißenfels. Meanwhile, the current prison staff in Halle are likely less enthusiastic about relocating their workplace to Weißenfels. If the new super-prison opens, the existing facilities in Halle will close. But who cares what the affected people want, right?

Also, a high-voltage power line owned by Deutsche Bahn runs across the property. Could it be relocated at lightning speed? In Germany – with planning phases that sometimes take many years?

The responsible ministries have yet to make a decision. That’s taking too long for Mayor Martin Papke. And yet, he is a chief administrative officer himself and should know that in public administration, things simply take time. Sometimes a long time. A very long time. And pushing the administration? That’s not something it particularly enjoys – especially not when it comes to things it doesn't want in the first place.

Rumor has it that the proceeds from selling the land for the prison to the state of Saxony-Anhalt are intended to plug holes in Weißenfels’ municipal budget. Some are already wondering what will be sold next to cover the next financial shortfall.

If everything goes according to plan regarding the correctional system in the spirit of Mayor Papke, the lovely walls of the super-prison might soon be adorned with an even lovelier slogan: JVA Weißenfels greets its guests. At the historical parade, that’s exactly what one of the banners says. And perhaps, then, day-release prisoners will use their free time to take part in the parade – in prison attire, of course. Wouldn’t that be something?
