Future Dialogue Part 2 – Tangible Digitalization: How Sensors and LoRaWAN Are Making the Burgenlandkreis Smarter

In the second part of the "Zukunftsdialog – How Should Our Burgenlandkreis Develop by 2028?" the spotlight was on digitalization – with a particularly hands-on keynote by Robert Bogs, founder, data expert, and passionate sensor tinkerer from Kayna, a district of Zeitz.

Bogs jokingly refers to himself as a “LoRaWAN influencer” and demonstrated through simple yet impactful examples how smart technologies can make a tangible difference – even in small communities, without huge budgets or complicated tech.

Swimming Pool Example: Preventing Water Loss for Just 90 Euros

A particularly vivid example came right at the beginning: When the Kayna outdoor pool suddenly lacked water in the summer of 2023, the proposed solution was costly – literally. The initial idea: an €18,000 fence to prevent sabotage. But Robert Bogs had another approach: a fill-level sensor costing just €90, connected via the free LoRaWAN wireless network, now automatically reports when the water level drops unexpectedly. A simple measure with a big impact – and no expensive fence needed.

Smart Agriculture: Detecting Fungal Risk in Sugar Beets Early

Together with local farmers, Bogs developed further projects: Affordable environmental sensors (starting at approx. €40) can monitor temperature and humidity in the fields. This helps detect the risk of Cercospora fungal infections in sugar beets early – before visible damage occurs. The result: less pesticide use, reduced plant stress, and more sustainable resource management.

Digital Solutions from the Region – for the Region

The core of all these solutions is the LoRaWAN network, which Bogs operates voluntarily in Kayna and continues to expand – with locations in Würchitz, Osterfeld, and Rustdorf, among others. The technology is remarkably simple: battery-powered sensors (with up to 8 years of lifespan) transmit data over long distances – license-free and data-efficient. This makes it possible to also monitor heaters, buildings, or energy storage units.

Vision of a Citizen Energy Initiative

But Bogs thinks even further: Inspired by the example in Martinfeld (Thuringia), where citizens jointly founded an energy cooperative, he envisions similar initiatives in the Burgenlandkreis – ones that not only measure but also generate, store, and feed energy back into local cycles. This strengthens local value creation, revitalizes communities – and offers real future prospects.

Call to Action: Every Village Has a Nerd – Give Them Space!

His closing message was clear: Almost every village has someone with technical know-how, ideas, and initiative. Often, all that’s missing is a spark, an audience, or the right infrastructure to turn ideas into impactful projects. That’s why Bogs calls for collaboration – for a digital, future-ready Burgenlandkreis that recognizes and utilizes its potential.
