Future Dialogue - How Should Our Burgenlandkreis Develop by 2038?

Part 1 of the event on June 25, 2025, at the Burtschützer Hof near Tröglitz / Zeitz

On June 25, 2025, the first part of a remarkable event took place at the Burtschützer Hof near Tröglitz / Zeitz, titled “Future Dialogue – How Should Our Burgenlandkreis Develop by 2038?”. The event was organized by the Bürgerinitiative Burgenlandkreis, composed of the "Structural Change Optimizers" and the "Nature Friends of Saxony-Anhalt". Deliberately independent of political parties, committed citizens came together to ask a central question: How can structural change in Burgenlandkreis be designed meaningfully, sustainably, and as a comprehensive concept—beyond isolated measures and fragmented projects?

A Citizen Dialogue with Vision

The event, organized and documented entirely on a voluntary basis, was moderated by Fatina Siwczak and lasted more than three hours. Despite the extensive program—divided into three thematic areas—there was room for discussion, exchange, and short breaks. The tone of the event was deliberately open, participatory, and forward-looking.

At the outset, the initiative made it clear: There is no overarching structural change concept in Burgenlandkreis—only many individual measures. This is exactly where they wanted to start: with a citizen-driven idea for a coherent overall concept.

Vision: A Center of Excellence for Inclusive Tourism

As a central guiding vision, the ambitious concept of a “Center of Excellence for Inclusive Tourism” was formulated. Various social and economic sectors are to be meaningfully interconnected—including digitalization, energy economy, construction, youth participation, and volunteerism.

Particular emphasis is placed on the regional value chain. The initiative stressed the importance of systematically identifying existing resources, linking them, and developing them sustainably. The goal is to create synergies instead of isolated measures.

Topic Area 1: Digitalization, Energy, and Construction

The first part of the evening focused on how digitalization and the energy sector in Burgenlandkreis can not only be future-proof but also locally usable. A central dilemma was addressed: Energy is produced in the region, but not utilized locally.

An innovative proposal was the combination of local block storage systems for renewable energy with digital server stations powered by locally produced green electricity.

Especially in a time when data processing and data centers are becoming increasingly important, such “green server parks” with their own energy storage could represent a model for decentralized value creation. The vision: connect digitalization, climate protection, and local revenue.

A critical point raised was that, unlike other parts of Saxony-Anhalt where 20 large-scale battery storage projects already exist, none are currently planned in Burgenlandkreis. A missed opportunity?

Challenges and Perspectives

The shortage of skilled workers is a major challenge for the region. Therefore, it is essential to focus on technology-based sectors that require less personnel but still generate value. At the same time, smart strategies are needed to retain young people, promote volunteerism, and enable participation—especially through digital media.

Another key topic: intergenerational communication. For a sustainable concept, it is essential to include different age groups—using appropriate and targeted communication channels.

Burgenlandkreis stands at a crossroads. The Future Dialogue clearly showed: citizens are ready to take responsibility, think creatively, and develop concrete visions—beyond party politics or administrative routines. With the idea of becoming a Center of Excellence for Inclusive Tourism, a bold first step has been taken. It remains to be seen how the next parts of the event series will further develop this impulse.
