Let the Problems Begin - Association Founded for the IKIG

With puffed-up pride, the Burgenlandkreis proudly announced on its Facebook page the founding of the association for the so-called IKIG – the intermunicipal industrial area.

Under the enthusiastic slogan “The Association Takes Off 🚀”, a milestone for the region is being celebrated. A fresh start, a new beginning, a promise for the future – at least according to the official narrative.

The sober facts initially sound impressive: On June 16, the association was officially constituted. District Administrator Götz Ulrich is now the chairman of the assembly, and Maik Wittke will take on the management role on a voluntary basis. A hefty funding application for 121.5 million euros is already in the pipeline. The goal: economic momentum, new jobs, sustainable development, modern infrastructure. Buzzwords galore – what more could one want?

Anyone who looks more closely at the formation of this association will quickly realize: democratic transparency was evidently not a primary concern. The founding was approved by a majority in the district council – despite numerous open questions. The only faction that voiced criticism was the AfD. Citizen protests that had already begun beforehand were – to put it politely – ignored.

The IKIG itself symbolizes a profound transformation in the region. Structural change has been politically initiated because Germany wants to phase out coal, reduce CO₂ emissions, and supposedly save the climate. The price for this is high: coal mining, which for decades was the region’s economic backbone, is being shut down – and instead, agriculturally valuable land is being sealed off to create “sustainable” industrial areas somewhere. The irony of transformation? More than evident.

Even District Administrator Ulrich, not usually known for being a voice of caution, admitted during the district council meeting on May 5, 2025 (see video – the video starts at the agenda item in question) that there will be “many problems” with the IKIG. Which ones exactly? No word. No mention of the looming destruction of farmland, no honest debate about the conflicting goals between structural change and climate protection. As long as, come election time, officials can proudly proclaim they’ve “brought in” hundreds of millions to the district. Whether these funds will be wisely invested is a whole other story.

The association may now be officially established – but its purpose remains unclear to many. What is being sold as an economic beacon of hope could just as well turn out to be a Trojan horse: full of risks, long-term obligations, and irreversible interventions in the landscape. This certainly doesn’t look like sustainability.

One thing is certain: with the founding of the IKIG association, one thing has definitely been achieved – the beginning of many new problems.
