Thank God! No one is responsible for the Corona policy!

Imagine locking people up for months, forbidding them from visiting their dying relatives, closing schools, ruining livelihoods – and in the end, the official verdict is: acted “to the best of their knowledge and conscience.”

Welcome to Saxony-Anhalt, where the reckoning with Corona measures is now entering the phase of collective amnesia.

At the state parliament session on June 14, the report of the “Commission for Evaluating the Effects of the Corona Pandemic” was presented. The 179-page document contains 75 recommendations and identifies massive shortcomings in the handling of care-dependent individuals, children, adolescents, and the role of parliaments. And yet: No one is responsible. No resignation, no personal consequences, not even a political shrug.

Guilty? Perhaps. Responsible? Never.

Interior Minister Tamara Zieschang (CDU) emphasized: “The executive acted in an emergency situation.” Green Party faction leader Cornelia Lüddemann even praised the fact that decisions were often made “overnight.” FDP faction leader Andreas Silbersack spoke of a “freedom-restricting nightmare” but wisely refrained from naming names. And Eva von Angern (The Left) demanded more parliamentary involvement – without mentioning that it was precisely this parliament that had disempowered itself during the crisis.

While people had to die alone because visiting bans in care homes were “ethically and legally problematic” – as the report states – today, no one can quite remember who actually introduced these rules.

State Parliament as a Stage for Self-Glorification

Instead of real accountability, we are witnessing the next chapter of political reality denial. The commission provides evidence of professional and ethical failures, yet those politically responsible retreat into a moral no-man’s-land: They “only meant well.” A phrase that regularly serves to justify failure.

In the end, the conclusion sounds like satire but is political reality: Everyone was involved, but no one was responsible.
