Weißenfels Has No Plan – Or Rather: No Clue! Online Survey on Revitalizing the City Center35 years after the reunification, and in Weißenfels the city center feels like a broken washing machine: it rattles, it stinks, nothing works – and no one really knows where to start. And while the plaster slowly crumbles from the facades, the big idea arrives: an online survey!
The city administration, led by a mayor seemingly waiting for the big “It’ll work out eventually” miracle, has realized: it can’t go on like this. So, here comes a new retail concept! And because, even after decades, there’s still no concrete vision, they’re getting help – from Erlangen. Yes, Erlangen. A city that, according to recent reports, is struggling with its own issues – probably even managing its city center decline better than Weißenfels. But maybe the idea is: if you're fishing in murky waters, at least do it together? It surely doesn’t cost much to buy this “expertise” from 250 kilometers away. Cluelessness at the Highest LevelWhat’s happening here isn’t just a lack of planning – it’s deluxe confusion. The city center is turning into a museum of empty storefronts, and now the city is finally asking: Why, actually? But honestly: is the problem really just the location? Or is there more to it? Online shopping, skyrocketing rents, declining purchasing power, overregulated urban development – all issues that even Erlangen can’t solve with Excel spreadsheets and pedestrian counters. Maybe Weißenfels needs to look beyond its own pedestrian zone and instead look up – toward state or federal politics. Because if cities are forced to just watch their centers die nationwide, something is fundamentally broken. And instead of tackling that, they’re launching a survey. Well intended, but – as so often – a diagnosis without a treatment. Still: Take Part! And here comes the paradox: precisely because it’s all so absurd, it’s worth participating. Not because it will turn the tide. But because every honest answer is a little needle prick to city hall. And who knows – maybe they’ll eventually realize that you can’t forever chase after external consultants.👉 Here is the link to the survey: www.marktundstandort.de/weissenfels_hh.htm Your opinion matters. Not just to save local shops. But maybe also to change the thinking inside city hall. And who knows – if enough people say that it’s not just the city, but the politics around it, maybe Weißenfels will finally wake up. Or we’ll just keep going with questionnaires and flower pots. PRESS RELEASE Weißenfels, May 14, 2025 City Center in Transition City of Weißenfels Seeks Support from Visitors in Household Survey on Shopping Habits The city of Weißenfels is taking new steps to make its city center future-ready and to secure local retail services for its citizens in the long term. As part of developing a new retail concept, an online household survey is launching immediately and is open to all visitors of the city of Weißenfels. The survey can be accessed via the link www.marktundstandort.de/weissenfels_hh.htm and will be available until June 22, 2025. The goal of the survey is to gather the most accurate picture possible of shopping behavior in Weißenfels – both in the core city and its districts. The results will feed directly into the new retail concept, which the city is developing together with the consultancy firm Markt und Standort Beratungsgesellschaft mbH from Erlangen. This concept aims to help combat vacancies, increase investment security, and reimagine the city center as a vibrant place for commerce, dining, and community. Data protection and anonymity are top priorities in this survey. No personal data will be collected – all responses will be evaluated strictly anonymously and confidentially. The household survey is part of a broader process to develop retail strategies in Weißenfels, which is being accompanied by a dedicated working group. Representatives from retail, city marketing, politics, and civil society are contributing their perspectives. Initial impulses such as the desire for more walkable stores, barrier-free infrastructure, and expanded culinary offerings have already been noted.
