Smartphone Duty for Grandma and Grandpa – Finally, the Government Catches You in Its NetHooray! Progress is galloping ahead—and finally trampling right over Grandma and Grandpa. Gone are the days of the cozy analog world, when a pension ID was still made of sturdy cardboard, easily tucked into a wallet and functional right there. Now it's: digital or nothing. The federal government has big plans—and our senior citizens will now get to enjoy the digital age. Whether they want to or not. Because the new pension ID is coming: not by mail, not on paper, but straight to your smartphone. That sounds like science fiction to many people over 80—but it’s about to become reality. No digital ID? No proof. No smartphone? Tough luck. Or buy one. Or a tablet. Or ask your grandchild to “just quickly” show your digital ID during a check on their iPhone. What could possibly go wrong? And should the smartphone—as so often happens with age—simply fall, go for a swim, freeze, or get lost: no problem! Restoring this wonderfully simple digital document on a new device is child’s play for the 80+ generation. You just need a few login credentials, an email address, a password, backup access to your cloud service, and ideally a second device for authentication. So what’s the issue? Maybe give your grandchild a quick call—but they studied computer science, or at least TikTok. And the retail sector will be delighted too! Anyone who manages to find, open, and show their digital pension ID on their smartphone can surely handle the supermarket app as well. Collect points, redeem discounts, receive offers via push notifications—all digital. Grandma and Grandpa will become loyalty points pros! Finally, you only get that yogurt discount if you’ve tapped through seven menus. Now if that’s not progress? So the digital ID isn’t just a blessing for administration—it’s a brilliant training program too: whoever masters this can go straight on to online banking, tax returns via Elster, and their digital health record in the telematics app. And the data? Naturally, it flows directly to whoever needs it: politicians, health insurers, advertising companies. The transparent citizen? A nightmare for many—now a daily reality for retirees. We thank the government for this innovative idea. Saving a few cents on postage and plastic cards is being paid for with maximum alienation from the public. But hey—digital first! That many affected don’t even know how to obtain this digital ID? Not really a problem. Because progress, above all, means: no alternatives. And of course, our visually impaired and blind fellow citizens were thought of—with all the empathy of a spreadsheet. For those who can barely see or not at all, a digital document on a glowing screen is, of course, a true delight! Finally, one can fumble through tiny icons, poorly contrasted menus, and opaque app structures—or better yet: feel them. But don’t worry, there’s assistive software. You just have to find it, activate it, understand it, and operate it. Child’s play for someone who used to simply feel where the paper ID was. Now it’s: barrier-free through digital hell. But hey—digital first! Our politicians clearly know what the people want—and urgently need. Only complainers, technophobes, and progress-deniers think this is bad.
