The intolerance-plagued in Burgenlandkreis – When freedom of speech is perceived as harassment

You know them, those knights of supposed tolerance, who in every discussion pretend to stand for openness and freedom of speech – as long as the opinion is the right one.

However, as soon as a thought emerges that doesn't fit into their double-moral corset, the banner of tolerance is rolled up faster than an umbrella in a storm.

A recent example of this absurd spectacle: my sharing of an article from "Der Bürgerstimme" in the local Facebook group. One would think that a group called "Mein Teuchern und Umgebung" would be interested in information about Teuchern – a naive misconception! The mere mention of an unwelcome source was enough to set alarm bells ringing. The outrage simmered, and as always in such cases, there was only one solution: the demand for banishment and prohibition!

But it didn’t stop there. A few hypersensitive guardians of pure doctrine apparently felt so disturbed in their digital comfort zone that they quickly created a new group from the ground up: "Teuchern und Umgebung 2.0". What a coincidence that Facebook promptly suggested this freshly minted refuge for purity guards to me! An attempt to share a relevant post for Teuchern there was met with an even more radical response: The post wasn’t approved, and I was not only silenced – I was completely removed from the group, as if my existence there had never existed. One could think I had spread subversive material, not just shared a link to a factual publication.

What does this say about the much-touted diversity of opinion? Apparently nothing good. The so-called "tolerant" ones once again expose themselves as the real intolerant ones. It's not about having discussions or engaging with other perspectives – it’s solely about maintaining their own comfort zone at any cost. Those who don’t fit into it are banished, deleted, and rendered nonexistent.

But this is nothing new to me. A Weißenfels and a Hohenmölsen Facebook group no longer exist for me, nor do certain Facebook accounts – including the Simon-Rau-Center in Weißenfels, which has supposedly championed tolerance, right? When I search for them on Facebook while logged in, these groups and profiles don’t appear.

I’m used to a lot by now. I’ve been called a Nazi, brown, fascist, and #volksschädling by people wearing rainbow flag costumes. The pandemic years have separated the wheat from the chaff – the tolerant from the intolerant. This is simply characteristic of our time. Anyone who uses the wrong words or quotes the wrong source is gone faster than a snowflake in a furnace.

Uniformity of opinion is still absolutely in trend

Recently, the beloved Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier called for stronger regulation of internet companies. This unchecked freedom of speech once again threatens "OUR democracy," which everyone constantly praises. It simply cannot be that the dominance of opinion is questioned by freedom of speech, and that voters might come to the idea of not making their marks with the beloved leaders or their parties.

My fundamental attitude is more in line with what is attributed to Voltaire: "My dear sir, I do not share your opinion, but I would fight to the death for your right to express it."

Voltaire is also said to have said: "It is dangerous to be right when the government is wrong." We experience this every day in this "OUR democracy," which is supposedly so tolerant and open-minded.

A tip for the intolerance-plagued

I have a small tip for all the intolerance-plagued out there: Simply scroll past the topics that are of no interest. Eventually, the algorithm will ensure that you are no longer "harassed" by such topics or opposing opinions.
