No New Landfill Construction in the Heart of the "Tuscany of the North"Open Letter: No New Landfill Construction in the Heart of the "Tuscany of the North," in the Middle of the Wine-Growing Region on the Saale and Unstrut! Open Letter: No New Landfill Construction in the Heart of the "Tuscany of the North," in the Middle of the Wine-Growing Region on the Saale and Unstrut!Dear Prime Minister, Dear Prof. Dr. Willingmann, Dear Mr. Ulrich, Ladies and Gentlemen, The local group of BUND Burgenlandkreis and the Nature Friends of Saxony-Anhalt e.V. are deeply concerned that two new landfills will soon be constructed near Freyburg/Unstrut, directly adjacent to the vineyards from Neuenburg Castle to the wine village of Schleberoda - Zeuchfeld. There is a danger that a fascinating cultural and natural landscape (Nature Park "Saale-Unstrut-Triasland") could become one of the largest landfills in the state of Saxony-Anhalt for a long time to come. Furthermore, other large landfills in Burgenlandkreis are already in approval or planning stages! Burgenlandkreis as a “garbage dump”? Current status: Initiation of a planning approval procedure by the Environmental Office of Burgenlandkreis, Saxony-Anhalt, with a public inspection deadline until January 20, 2025, and submission of objections until February 20, 2025 (documents available on the Burgenlandkreis website, official announcements, construction and operation of a landfill class 0 and 1). What is planned: Directly next to the closed municipal and hazardous waste landfill Freyburg-Zeuchfeld, two new landfills of class 0 and class I are to be built. Key technical features: Planned landfill volume for DK 0 = 2.47 million m³ and for DK I = 1.78 million m³. The planned duration is specified as 24 years. The extremely high burden from constant waste transport on all roads passing through the nature park is about 65 trips per day or up to seven heavy trucks per hour. The main types of waste are slags and filter dust from waste incineration plants and flue gas treatment as well as other thermal processes. A common feature of these waste types is the possible presence of very hazardous substances such as heavy metals, dioxins, PFAS. We fear the danger of dust fallout in the immediately adjacent vineyards during transport to the landfill site. Additionally, there are significant odor-intensive emissions from waste treatment plants and wastes containing hazardous asbestos fibers, bitumen, and railway ballast. Resulting potential risks for the wine-growing region: There is a danger of spreading toxic dust to the adjacent vineyards and absorption of these substances through leaves and roots. Climate change causing increasing stormy weather and shifting winds will not only cause the already predicted dangerous dust fallout on the vineyards of Schleberoda - Zeuchfeld. The surrounding areas of Freyburg, including Natura 2000 sites such as Schlossberg, Burgholz, Marienberg, and the Toten Täler (Dead Valleys), among others, will also be affected. Just recently, there was financial support from federal and state governments amounting to 1.38 million euros for the Geo-Nature Park "Saale-Unstrut-Triasland" e.V. to strengthen biodiversity along the Saale and Unstrut. It is therefore not only about the future spoiled view of the wine terraces of Neuenburg Castle toward a large landfill. The "Mediterranean flair" promoted by the Saale-Unstrut Tourism GmbH for the town of Freyburg can no longer be communicated as such. With such planning, the economic future of this nature park region—focused on nature conservation and sustainable tourism—and the livelihoods of many vintners and marketers are at stake. Orientation toward organic wine growing under these circumstances is hardly conceivable. The Burgenlandkreis local group of BUND Saxony-Anhalt and the Nature Friends Saxony-Anhalt e.V. appeal to you not to allow the construction of this large landfill in the heart of our "Tuscany of the North". With kind regards, the local group of BUND KG Burgenlandkreis KG Board Thomas Kuhlbrodt, Wolfgang Gotthelf, Diana Harnisch the Nature Friends Saxony-Anhalt e.V. Vines climb the slopes. Over all, a medieval castle towers. If you think you are in Italy, you are mistaken, even though the region is known as the "Tuscany of the North." No, we are in southern Saxony-Anhalt, more precisely in the Saale-Unstrut region. And thus also in Germany’s northernmost quality wine-growing area. For centuries, viticulture has shaped the people in the Saale-Unstrut region. As early as the year 998, Emperor Otto III gifted the monastery of Memleben seven villages, including vineyards. The monks at the Cistercian monastery of Pforte later significantly advanced viticulture. Today, the 760-hectare wine-growing area is characterized by untouched landscapes with vineyards, steep terraces, dry stone walls, and romantic vineyard cottages. Don’t forget to visit the Rotkäppchen-Mumm sparkling wine cellar in Freyburg and enjoy a glass of the delicious Rotkäppchen sparkling wine! After a walk through the vineyards and a wine tasting at one of the many vintners, you embark on a time journey into the High Middle Ages. The historic cultural landscape in the Saale-Unstrut area hosts a globally unique density of preserved monuments from the 11th to 13th centuries. The Naumburg Cathedral, Neuenburg Castle in Freyburg, and the Cistercian monastery Schulpforta are just a few examples. Not without reason, the high medieval lordship landscape on the Saale and Unstrut, together with the famous Naumburg Cathedral, is on its way to becoming a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This is expected by 2015. The “Tuscany of the North” lies in southern Saxony-Anhalt. Since the late 10th century, viticulture has been practiced in the Saale-Unstrut-Triasland Nature Park. Monks brought viticulture knowledge from Franconia. Not only the climate but also the impressive rock formations in the nature park are ideal for viticulture. Be sure to take a detour to Freyburg, as in and around the town you will find traditional wineries such as the Rotkäppchen-Mumm sparkling wine cellar – a tasting awaits you there! Alongside its fascinating natural landscape, the Saale-Unstrut-Triasland Nature Park also represents an extensive cultural landscape. Structures like Naumburg Cathedral, the present-day Landesschule Kloster Pforta, and numerous monasteries, castles, and palaces underline the region’s special character. Also visit the find site of the Nebra Sky Disc, the oldest known depiction of the cosmos, discovered in the Saale-Unstrut-Triasland Nature Park. CycleHeavy metals are absorbed by plants from the soil and enter the food chain directly or via animals to humans and finally back into the soil. Since they are hardly or not degradable, they never leave the cycle and end up in the wine via the grapes. Certain heavy metals can cause poisoning of soil, plants, animals, or humans depending on the amount. In viticulture, they can be immobilized in the soil through “passive measures” such as fertilization with alkaline substances, thus rendering them harmless.Heavy Metals in WineDuring winemaking, certain heavy metals, such as copper or iron, may be removed from the young wine because they can cause a metallic note which, if pronounced, is considered a wine fault. This is done by a special fining process. There are defined maximum permissible levels for heavy metals in wine; see the list under ADI (Acceptable Daily Intake).![]() Press Release of the Federation for Environment and Nature Conservation Germany, BUND Saxony-Anhalt e.V.MZ Article from 08.11.2018 by Constanze Matthes on: Two New Landfills Planned; Zeuchfeld: Authorities Review Plans The state association of BUND Saxony-Anhalt e.V. asked the BUND district association BLK to represent the interests of the environmental organization in the procedure for the construction of two new landfills in the Freyburg area. Unfortunately, the official information-based presentation in the above-mentioned article does not correspond to the known course of preparation for the environmental impact assessment (EIA) as a prerequisite for project approval. It is implied that the responsible authority, the BLK Environmental Office, is working on the preparation of the EIA in compliance with legal requirements and that everything is well and correct, including involving environmental organizations at an early stage. However, there were already significant errors in the preparation of the definition of the investigation framework for the planned EIA (scoping), which were made known to the environmental authority by BUND. The procedural irregularities mentioned must not lead to environmental damage and impairment of the "Tuscany of the North." For this reason, BUND demands that the application procedure must be reconsidered and legal requirements must be strictly adhered to. BUND urges the public to scrutinize the plans carefully and to participate in the objection process by February 20, 2025. For more information see the BUND Burgenlandkreis website.
