Furthermore, other large landfills in Burgenlandkreis are already in approval or planning stages! Burgenlandkreis as a “garbage dump”? Current status: Initiation of a planning approval procedure by the Environmental Office of Burgenlandkreis, Saxony-Anhalt, with a public inspection deadline until January 20, 2025, and submission of objections until February 20, 2025 (documents available on the Burgenlandkreis website, official announcements, construction and operation of a landfill class 0 and 1). What is planned: Directly next to the closed municipal and hazardous waste landfill Freyburg-Zeuchfeld, two new landfills of class 0 and class I are to be built. Key technical features: Planned landfill volume for DK 0 = 2.47 million m³ and for DK I = 1.78 million m³. The planned duration is specified as 24 years. Climate change causing increasing stormy weather and shifting winds will not only cause the already predicted dangerous dust fallout on the vineyards of Schleberoda - Zeuchfeld. The surrounding areas of Freyburg, including Natura 2000 sites such as Schlossberg, Burgholz, Marienberg, and the Toten Täler (Dead Valleys), among others, will also be affected. Just recently, there was financial support from federal and state governments amounting to 1.38 million euros for the Geo-Nature Park "Saale-Unstrut-Triasland" e.V. to strengthen biodiversity along the Saale and Unstrut. It is therefore not only about the future spoiled view of the wine terraces of Neuenburg Castle toward a large landfill. The "Mediterranean flair" promoted by the Saale-Unstrut Tourism GmbH for the town of Freyburg can no longer be communicated as such. With such planning, the economic future of this nature park region—focused on nature conservation and sustainable tourism—and the livelihoods of many vintners and marketers are at stake. Orientation toward organic wine growing under these circumstances is hardly conceivable.
