Protest Against IKIG: Information Event in Zorbau – Open Letter to Minister President HaseloffOn Friday, November 22, 2024, a high-profile and well-attended information event took place at the Friedenseiche in Zorbau. ![]() Organized by representatives of the Burgenlandkreis citizens’ initiative “NoLandForIKIG,” the German Federation for the Environment and Nature Conservation (BUND), and the NatureFriends of Saxony-Anhalt, the event focused on opposition to the planned Intermunicipal Industrial and Commercial Zone (IKIG). Despite the urgency of the topic, many members of the city and local councils were notably absent, even though they had been invited. ![]() Influence by the District Administrator? There is suspicion that local representatives are being influenced by political pressure from the district administrator rather than acting independently in the interest of future generations. In similar cases in Kabelsketal (Star Park II) and Wiedemar, local councils had rejected such projects.![]() Open Letter to Minister President HaseloffThomas Kuhlbroth (BUND) drafted an open letter. Together with Wolfgang Gotthelf (BUND) and Diana Harnisch (NatureFriends Saxony-Anhalt), the letter was delivered to the state parliament administration in Magdeburg on November 23, 2024. It is addressed to the Minister President of the state of Saxony-Anhalt, Reiner Haseloff, as well as to all parliamentary groups in the state parliament.![]() left to right: Thomas Kuhlbroth, Diana Harnisch, Wolfgang Gotthelf

Open Letter to the Minister President of the State of Saxony-Anhalt and to the Members of Parliament of All Parliamentary Groups in the Saxony-Anhalt State Parliament (LT LSA) Intermunicipal Industrial and Commercial Zone (IKIG) Dear Minister President, Dear Members of Parliament, We all observe increasing political disenchantment and a growing loss of trust among large parts of the population in decisions that fundamentally impact our lives. Current elections, opinion polls, and the general mood in our immediate environment consistently reflect this state. When, for example, majority public opinion is demonstrably ignored, expert organizations produce critical analyses, citizen initiatives remain unheard, and environmental groups apparently receive no support from the responsible authorities, then democratic participation and/or the process of opinion formation itself must be called into question. This has clearly been the case in the planning process for the IKIG. In order to promote structural change in the core region (Weißenfels – Hohenmölsen – Zeitz), this mega-project is not needed. The funds earmarked for it could be more effectively used in other projects. The undersigned are ready and able to immediately submit concrete, feasible proposals. The IKIG contradicts not only common sense, but also basic logical, ecological, economic, and even social considerations. Moreover, it violates legal provisions outlined in the state development plan of Saxony-Anhalt. We therefore request your intervention in this matter. At the same time, you would be preventing a direct affront to the named forms of civic participation. All signatories (UZ) will, regardless of the decisions made by the state parliament, continue to proactively inform the public, including the media, about future developments concerning the “IKIG” case. The representatives of the UZ are, of course, available to engage in results-oriented dialogue. With kind regards, Citizens’ Initiative Burgenlandkreis and the NatureFriends Saxony-Anhalt e.V.
