The Successful Selection and Training of Politically Compliant Artists and Cultural Workers

Images are circulating online listing artists alongside the question: When will your statements on the #RKIFiles come? The answer for most is probably: Never!

Some may still remember the #AlarmstufeRot campaign. On the website https://alarmstuferot.org it says: “We are the alliance of the most influential initiatives and associations of the German events industry.” and: “We are Germany’s sixth largest economic sector with €130.0 billion in revenue and over 1 million employees.” The cultural sector and cultural workers were threatened by the politically mandated measures during the Corona pandemic.

Numerous demonstrations were organized and held. Public buildings were lit up in red. Artists wanted to bring their protest to the streets and squares because politics had partly brought cultural operations to a standstill. Nevertheless, the cultural sector relied on political aid. On the website, alongside a picture of then Federal Finance Minister Olaf Scholz, the quote is shown: “We are going all in to support even the smallest businesses and solo self-employed.” 27.03.2020 Federal Press Conference, followed by Federal Minister for Economic Affairs Peter Altmaier: “The message to all the many medium-sized companies in the trade fair and hospitality sector is: We will not abandon you. We will help you get through this difficult time.” 08.03.2020 DPA

“The wave of bankruptcies in the events industry must be stopped! In our undeserved existential emergency, we urgently need support to survive. We have developed solutions for what this support can look like. In detail, we consider the following six measures sensible and effective to save the events industry and thus thousands of companies as well as millions of jobs.” is still stated on the website.

Was that brave?

YES AND NO!

Certainly, protesting the politically mandated measures was to be welcomed. Anyone who has looked deeper into the Corona pandemic would confirm that. But the artists listed on the website did not really show courage. Their #AlarmstufeRot demonstrations were held separately from the demonstrations of critics of the measures. The division had already borne fruit. The narrative that many right-wingers, Nazis, and Reich citizens walk at the so-called “lateral thinker” demos—or that lateral thinkers march alongside right-wingers, Nazis, and Reich citizens—had already been internalized by many cultural workers. Divide et impera worked and still works.

Help was sought from the very politics that deliberately caused the problems

This shows how close the ties to politics are. The spread of politically launched disinformation through major media outlets also worked excellently.

Selection and Training for Political Conformity in the Cultural Sector

At the time, it was clear to me that one of the pandemic’s goals—besides division—was also the selection and training toward conformity in the cultural sector. The wheat was separated from the chaff. Critics of the measures were vilified, marginalized, and banned from stages.

But the wipeout extended partly to performance opportunities. Privately run venues faced major financial difficulties, up to insolvency. Left standing are those cultural centers and major events where the public sector is involved and which can be supported with funds from cities and municipalities. You don’t have to be a conspiracy theorist to imagine that regional politics also influences who is allowed to perform at these cultural venues or festivals. Government critics are likely less welcome.

The consequence was and is that artists had to consider whether to speak out. Especially those often booked where politics has influence. Those who conform or appear to do so got through the pandemic comparatively well. Critics had and still have a hard time because the divide remains deep. The idea of “guilt by association” is still a topic.

When Will Your Statements on the #RKIFiles Come?

With the disclosure of the RKI protocols, it should now be unmistakably clear to every artist who might even like to be seen with politicians: They lied to you too. They used you for vaccination campaigns, for propaganda, for the division of society, for the division within the cultural sector. The cultural sector, which otherwise always presents itself as tolerant and diverse. They, the politicians, destroyed livelihoods. They did so deliberately and with full intent. They take no responsibility. The consequences don’t matter to them.

Who Really Has Courage?

Artists always like to talk about courage, standing up to the powerful, for peace, freedom, social justice, and so on… Maybe some still need a few more days. It will become clear which artists really have courage. First the courage to admit to themselves and to the outside world that they did not recognize the lies and deceptions. And then the courage to reflect on what artists like to carry in front of them. Courage to not give a damn about guilt by association or similar. Courage to reach out to those artists and people with whom they can work again, who already saw four years ago what was going on. The courage to represent this collaboration or at least this association in front of others—with arguments like tolerance, diversity, and freedom of expression. Courage to judge people by what they say and do, not by what others say about them. Courage to take the hand that these lateral conspiracy theorists repeatedly stretched out to overcome division.

The Wheat Will Separate from the Chaff Again

It will become clear who dares to come out as brave in the future and who will continue to swim along with political decisions and politicians without reflecting on the pandemic years or other narratives.

Until then, the question remains current online:
When will your statements on the #RKIFiles come?
I don’t hear you!
