CANCELLATION – Events in the Cathedral Garden for the First June Weekend Cancelled – What Will Still Take Place

Due to the weather forecast predicting persistent heavy rain and thunderstorms, the organizers of the Naumburg Master Market, together with the United Cathedral Foundation, have mutually decided to cancel the Naumburg Master Market.

“The Cathedral Garden will remain closed during the first June weekend. Given the forecast of heavy rainfall and the resulting slippery ground in the Cathedral Garden, we do not want to take any risks for the visitors,” says Juliane Spielberg, who is responsible for the events at the United Cathedral Foundation.

As a result, in addition to the arts and crafts market, the “Rendezvous in the Garden,” the special guided tour “So Green It Grows,” and the tower tours for children on Children’s Day are also cancelled.

“We still look forward to visitors who want to explore the Cathedral over the weekend, because not everything is being washed out,” says Juliane Spielberg.

The special guided tour on the theme “The Body of Christ,” the public tours, the tour through the Cathedral Foundation Archive, the open workshop in the Children’s Cathedral Construction Hut, and the choir concert by Collegium Canticum Novum will take place. Whether the tower tour happens will be decided depending on the current weather conditions.

Special Guided Tour “The Body of Christ”

The special guided tour on the evening of May 31 is dedicated to the veneration, adoration, and crucifixion depiction of Jesus Christ across various epochs. On a tour through the Cathedral starting at 6 p.m., we will show you how the depiction of Christ on the cross differs in Romanesque and Gothic art, which feast was established in the 13th century for special Christ veneration, and what significance bread and wine hold in today’s services at Naumburg Cathedral.

Open Workshop of the Children’s Cathedral Construction Hut

The Children’s Cathedral Construction Hut opens its workshop for everyone! On Saturday, June 1, between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m., flower stakes can be crafted.

Special Guided Tour “Cathedral Foundation Archive”

Those who want to dive even deeper into the 1000-year history have the opportunity on Saturday, June 1, at 1 p.m.: In the special guided tour “Cathedral Foundation Archive,” Cathedral Foundation Archivist Dr. Matthias Ludwig will take you on a journey into the past of the Cathedral Foundation using precious manuscripts and documents from the archive and library collections.

Choir Concert Collegium Canticum Novum

When it comes to choral music, Naumburg Cathedral has been a top address in the Saale-Unstrut region for years. Following this reputation, another concert with excellently performed choral music will take place on Saturday, June 1, at 7:30 p.m. in Naumburg Cathedral. Under the motto “Media vita – In the Midst of Life,” a cappella choral music from the 17th to the 21st centuries will be performed. The focus is on the motet “Fear Not” BWV 228 by Johann Sebastian Bach. The renowned and regionally well-known vocal ensemble “Collegium Canticum Novum” presents this program with significant sacred choral music. The chamber choir Collegium Canticum Novum has existed since 1982. The approximately 35 singers, all with extensive choral experience, come together six to eight times a year from various regions of Germany to rehearse at changing locations and then present the program to a broad audience in concerts. Since the choir’s founding, Matthias Mücksch from Dresden has been the musical director. Admission is free; donations are warmly welcome.

For the tours, we recommend booking early through our online shop or visitor service. www.naumburger-dom.de
