Structural Change as a Joke Event – Our Tax Money at Work

The structural change that is politically desired and being pushed forward with great urgency seems to be treated as a joke by the state government. At least, that is the impression one can get when looking at the Facebook profile dedicated to structural change.

The institution responsible for the Facebook profile “Structural Change Saxony-Anhalt” is listed as: State Chancellery and Ministry of Culture of the State of Saxony-Anhalt, “Structural Change in the Central German Mining Region” Staff Office, Hegelstraße 42, 39104 Magdeburg, Tel.: +49 391 567 6560, Email: strukturwandel@stk.sachsen-anhalt.de. In other words, this is a Facebook profile run by the state government. Accordingly, whatever is posted there is their responsibility. If such posts cost money, the state pays for them – ultimately the taxpayers of Saxony-Anhalt, that is, all of us.

If you look at the posts and video clips on this profile, the inevitable question arises as to whether the state government regards structural change as a joke.

For example, there are clips that borrow from old movies and are apparently supposed to be funny somehow. The latest production is based on “Jurassic Park.” “It’s getting closer,” the text says. “Saxony-Anhalt has invested a whole lot.” And then there is a “comedian” in a children’s dinosaur costume explaining: “We’re riding the fossil phase-out here.” “Epic pun. Epic undertaking,” it continues. “And if you want to know more, then follow the channel,” viewers are urged.

But there really isn’t much more information to be found there – apart from the repeated claim that €4.8 billion is being poured into structural change. Where is the money going? How exactly is it being spent? No answer!

Alongside government clips and promotional videos that are largely devoid of substance and consist mainly of empty buzzwords, there are further “masterpieces” at the lowest level of comedy. For example, the ZDF show “Bares für Rares” is parodied to promote the original structural-change spade, which supposedly has done some serious work. This spade is said to have been put to work at the groundbreaking ceremony for the education campus in Weißenfels, the groundbreaking ceremony for the expansion of the chemical park in Bitterfeld-Wolfen, the groundbreaking ceremony for the large-scale thermal energy storage facility in Hohenmölsen, the groundbreaking ceremony for the bypass in Bad Kösen, the groundbreaking ceremony for the renovation of the school building in Zeitz, and many other occasions. So, at the groundbreaking ceremony – not during the actual construction. Amazing, right? Viewers are asked: “Do you want to be part of the change? Then I have the change card for you,” once again followed by an invitation to follow the channel.

When projects are presented, they mostly concern education: creating educational spaces in buildings that were once used for industrial purposes. In other words, preserving memories and industrial heritage sites. Naturally, all of this is financed with public funding. Without subsidies, these buildings are apparently doomed to decay.

But where are the projects that actually create industrial jobs?

Another interesting clip is “Structural Change Explained by Cats.” It says: “And all the cats in the region are allowed to have their say – not just the government cats. With funding, ideas and courage, they are building start-ups, solar installations and research facilities.” Yet the claim about “having their say” could quite reasonably be described as disinformation. Because having a say can already be rather difficult in the Burgenland District. The Structural Change Committee of the district council does not have a public question period – unlike the other committees. So apparently, having a say is not particularly welcome there.

Accordingly, the rest of structural change seems to consist of subsidies, start-ups, solar installations and research facilities (which presumably would not function without government funding). Industrial jobs? Apparently not important and not planned.

Whatever it costs to operate this Facebook profile, it can reasonably be described as money thrown away. Clips that provide no added value and miss their goal by light-years: getting people excited about structural change. If this profile is supposed to be the showcase for structural change, one can imagine what the outcome of this structural change will be: a catastrophe!

Critics have known this for many years. I remember having the head of the Chamber of Industry and Commerce in Halle in front of my camera back in 2018. He said: “Politicians cannot create jobs, but they can destroy them.” That seems to be exactly where all of this is headed. The main thing is that the structure has been changed.
