Commemoration at the Former "Wille" Subcamp of the Concentration Camp in Rehmsdorf - May 8, 2024On May 8, 2024, many places commemorated the liberation from National Socialism and fascism, remembered, and warned that such times must never happen again. This included Rehmsdorf near Zeitz. On May 8, 2024, a commemoration ceremony with a wreath-laying was held at the memorial stone of the former "Wille" subcamp of Buchenwald Concentration Camp, marking the 79th anniversary of liberation from Hitler’s fascism. The event was organized by the "Wille" Subcamp Memorial in Rehmsdorf. The mayor and a pastor gave speeches, and participation was more than twice as large as the previous year. After the commemoration with wreath and flower-laying, attendees were invited to visit a former prisoner barrack, watch a documentary film, and engage in discussions. As a child in the early 1960s, I was introduced to this grim history of our home village by teacher Lothar Czosek, who passionately built this museum in the community center and in the museum barrack. Within my family and among acquaintances, I learned that back then—in 1944/45—there were courageous individuals who, at great personal risk, helped the concentration camp prisoners at the Brabag factory, in Gleina, and in Rehmsdorf, slipping them food and even saving them from execution! It is crucial, especially today in times when people are once again being divided and pitted against each other and the danger of resurgent fascism looms, that we become aware of our history and do not allow it to repeat itself. Peace is the most urgent imperative of our time! To achieve this, everyone must finally stand together! Imre Kertész, who came from Budapest as a high school student in 1944, was only fifteen years old when he experienced the dark shadows of Auschwitz and later Buchenwald. From there, he was forced into slave labor at the "Wille" subcamp in Gleina and the Brabag tent camp before ending up back in Gleina as a prisoner of the concentration camp, where he was compelled to perform forced labor at the Brabag factory. But on February 18, 1945, my grandfather took bold action when he stepped in front of him, ready to sacrifice his own life, and shouted to the SS officer: "You’ll have to shoot me first; he’s one of my best workers." Through this heroic act, my grandfather saved Imre’s life, who was then immediately sent back to Buchenwald, where he witnessed the camp’s self-liberation shortly before American soldiers arrived to liberate the region. Years later, in the 1970s, Imre Kertész managed to track down my grandfather’s address and traveled to Tröglitz to personally thank him for saving his life. This led to a lively correspondence between the two, but my grandfather remained modest about his heroic deed and did not go public with it. Instead, he shared his story only with some of his grandchildren. Author: AI-Translation - Arnd Eiert | vor dem 01.07.2024 |
