Renewed Protest in Lützen – Demo at the City Council Meeting, 30.04.2024, 6 PM, Lützen Market Against the Construction of a Supermarket

In Lützen, the citizens' initiative "No Supermarket in the Small Park" has been founded and invites to a demonstration, asking for support.

When it first became known in 2020 that the investor Schröder Holding and the city of Lützen planned to build a new supermarket directly in the small park on Schlossstraße, I absolutely could not understand this plan and was stunned.

Spontaneously, we (some equally shocked citizens) organized a protest action in the small park and thus made our opinion public that we are completely opposed to the choice of location for a new supermarket (Edeka).

There, where since the late Middle Ages the municipal cemetery was and where our ancestors found their final resting place, and where also the greatest benefactor and founder of the city Lützen, Karl Louis Martzsch (1830–1897), is buried, is now to stand precisely a modern supermarket with 90 parking spaces? I find this sacrilegious and a disgrace for our small town.

The next important date is now coming Tuesday, 30.04.2024. The topic is again on the agenda, in “city council speak” it is called: Resolution on the approval and public display of the draft development plan according to § 13a BauGB "Shopping Market on Schlossstraße." On this occasion, a demonstration will take place at 6 PM at the Lützen market, so that the city councilors can see and hear what many citizens think about the construction project.

Some city councilors are now advocating for a citizen referendum, which would be a democratic means to truly capture the will of the majority of citizens. Our citizens' initiative is expressly not against Edeka or the investor, but against the planned location in the historic green of the city of Lützen.
