Gunshot wound, pre-trial detention and terrorism allegations: How far will the German state go?A night-time police operation with a shot that almost ends fatally – plus serious allegations of an alleged “terrorist organization,” political entanglements, and the dispute over the question: rule of law or political persecution? 
My prison visit to Kurt Hättasch at Leipzig Prison on April 9, 2026Like all other inmates I have visited so far, I did not know Mr. Hättasch personally before.However, I still vividly remember the media coverage of the police raid at the time, because Kurt was seriously injured by a police officer’s gunshot. It borders on a miracle that he survived the injury. Now his story, which I am reproducing in essence as he told it to me: On November 5, 2024, a group of black-clad, masked individuals appeared in the early morning hours, while it was still dark, in front of his house and demanded that he leave the property. He then called the police and reported the incident. He believed that Antifa was planning an attack on him and his family. The police promised to come immediately. In order to meet the local police he had called and to guide them to his somewhat remote property, Mr. Hättasch left his house through the back entrance. He took a rifle with him, which was officially and legally in his possession, as he is a hunter. There he encountered individuals claiming to be police officers. A flashlight was shone directly into his face, so he could not properly perceive or assess the situation. The individuals demanded that he lay down his weapon, whereupon Kurt asked them to identify themselves first. Then a shot was fired and Kurt collapsed. He was taken to the hospital and, when doctors asked what had happened, the police did not disclose that it was a gunshot wound, which was later quickly determined. The doctors did an excellent job, because at first glance today I could no longer see any injury – even though the right lower jaw had been shattered into many pieces. His right arm was also paralyzed, because the bullet, deflected by the jaw, had entered the shoulder blade. He therefore had to spend 80 days in the prison hospital. My thanks and highest respect go to these doctors who restored the young man so well. But who exactly is Kurt Hättasch, and what is he accused of? Kurt is a metalworker by profession and completed his master craftsman qualification in April 2024. He is married and has a young daughter. He is also a member of the AfD, was chairman of the Young Alternative (JA) in the Leipzig district, and a city council member as well as parliamentary group leader of the AfD in the large district town of Grimma. As a hunter, he is very close to nature. He describes his political orientation as conservative. The public prosecutor’s office accuses him of being a member of the terrorist group “Saxon Separatists” and of allegedly planning, together with the main defendants, to build a new Nazi state after the collapse of the Federal Republic of Germany. To prepare for this, military exercises were allegedly carried out in the forest. The indictment also speaks of ethnic cleansing, similar to a Holocaust. In other words, the full program. At the start of the trial, Kurt himself gave a 15-hour statement addressing all charges and correcting them, as much of what the prosecution presented was allegedly inaccurate. For example, it was claimed that Kurt had threatened the police officers with his rifle, after which a police officer fired the shot. He is therefore also charged with attempted murder. However, there are video recordings that clearly prove this claim to be false. How is the young father Kurt Hättasch coping under these circumstances in prison?The conditions of detention are said to be good, the officers friendly, and he even has a very good relationship with fellow inmates, although 60% of them are foreigners who, due to extremely negative reporting by the Leipziger Volkszeitung, are very well aware of what he is accused of.He has a single cell and is allowed four hours of family visits per month. The worst part for him is that he is not even allowed to hold his young daughter in his arms, because visits are only permitted with a protective glass barrier. This is seen as an unnecessary and excessive measure, showing how inhumanly political prisoners are treated and how little even the well-being of a small child is taken into account, as physical contact with her father is denied. He was very pleased about the opportunity to train as a cook at the prison, after being denied distance learning during pre-trial detention. He is deeply disappointed with the behavior of the AfD leadership as a whole, but especially the AfD leadership in Saxony. They have not even asked how he is doing, let alone provided any form of support. On the contrary – they have distanced themselves from him without ever having spoken to him about the allegations in the indictment. As long as someone is in pre-trial detention, the presumption of innocence still applies, and he is innocent. While solidarity demonstrations by the Left/Antifa for a member of the “Hammer gang” regularly take place in the parking lot in front of the prison and can be seen from his window, AfD members were even forbidden by the state board to hold such a demonstration for him! He was therefore all the more pleased about my visit today. I also told him about the greeting card from the “walkers” from the southwest, which I was able to hand in at the gate. To me, it looks as if loose contacts between the accused AfD members and the main defendants are being used to drag the AfD into suspicion and thereby damage the entire party. Our political opponents use every opportunity to brand the AfD as far-right and thus dangerous. Destroyed existences, destroyed souls, torn-apart families, broken people – that is the brutal reality of political struggle.If individual fates are sacrificed for the “greater good,” who will still believe that politics truly serves the people? Or is it rather about one’s own power and income? Incidentally, even my own observations are now considered by the Office for the Protection of the Constitution to require urgent monitoring due to my prison visits.
