EU Destroys the Dream of “Green District Heating” and Makes Heating Unaffordable

Once again there is fantastic news to report that will make heating unaffordable and render the super-great “Green District Heating” concept absurd.

The “Green District Heating” project in Hohenmölsen is one of the big dreams, including that of Mayor Andy Haugk, to convert district heating from local lignite to “green” energy. The planned investment costs have climbed within just a few months from 50 million to 66 million euros. When the “Green District Heating” concept was first presented, it was planned that 25% of the required energy would come from solar and wind power. The remaining 75% of the energy was supposed to be generated from substitute fuels based on plastics (plastic waste) and/or wood pellets. The managing director of the district heating company said he hoped that heating costs would remain at the level they were at the time.

So it is clear in any case that wind and solar cannot cover the energy needs of a small town with 10,000 inhabitants.

This concept was slightly modified a few months ago. The 25% share of energy from wind and solar remains, but the remaining 75% is now supposed to come from natural gas. For this purpose, a natural gas pipeline is to be laid. In addition to the increase to 66 million euros in investment costs, heating prices are now expected to rise from the current approximately 15 cents per kWh to over 20 cents per kWh. Yes, that really makes every citizen’s heart beat faster. Spending more money on heating and having less money left in one’s pocket — who could possibly say no to that?

Yesterday another piece of joyful news was delivered to me by the YouTube algorithm. Namely this great interview, with a message that either drives you insane, into despair, or a step closer to a heart attack.

In this interview you learn that the wonderful EU Commission already launched a fantastic regulation in 2025 intended to reduce methane emissions worldwide. And because we apparently do not already have enough problems with high fuel prices that the much-loved leaders refuse to lower, another great aspect is that this regulation will come into force as early as January 1, 2027.

The EU regulation requires gas, oil, and coal importers to provide strict proof of measurement, reporting, and reduction of methane emissions (especially during production in third countries such as the USA, Qatar, Nigeria, or Algeria). The goal is a drastic reduction of methane leaks and routine flaring or venting. According to the forecasts mentioned in the interview, the consequences could include up to 43% fewer natural gas imports into the EU because many supplier countries cannot or will not meet the EU verification requirements in the short term. In addition, up to 87% fewer crude oil imports are expected. As a result, around 40% of EU refineries would have to close. Diesel would become about 16% more expensive and gasoline about 24% more expensive. There would be massive price increases for gas and oil, as well as industrial shutdowns, insufficient storage levels, and supply risks (especially in winter). Germany would be particularly affected because it hardly produces any of its own gas or oil anymore and is heavily dependent on imports. If that isn’t great news, right?

If one also takes into account that, due to the violation of international law in the attack war by the USA and Israel against Iran, roughly 20% of the globally available supply of oil and gas is already missing, anyone with a broad grin can imagine that gas producers around the world have no real reason to invest in their extraction technology to meet EU requirements — because the rest of the world simply does not care.

The core criticism of the video can be summarized as follows:
The measure is detached from reality and ideologically motivated (“climate protection above all else,” even above prosperity and supply security). The global effect is minimal (less than 0.1 °C warming reduction over 10 years) because natural gas and oil production accounts for only a small portion of methane emissions. The main sources of methane are agriculture and livestock farming, which cannot realistically be eliminated unless one calmly accepts famines. Other major emitters (China, Russia, India, the USA) ignore or block such rules. Europe dictates production standards to exporting countries even though it hardly produces anything itself anymore. The EU creates massive bureaucracy and penalties of up to 20% of producers’ revenue, which could lead to supply boycotts. This EU regulation received broad support from climate-panic parties in the EU Parliament (including CDU, SPD, FDP, Greens, and the Left). There is currently no public debate about it in Germany. Importers such as Uniper, Shell, and others are already explicitly warning that many deliveries will demonstrably not comply with the rules.

Was this taken into account in the concept of “Green District Heating”? I don’t think so. It can therefore be expected that heating prices will hardly remain at 20 cents per kWh.

In addition, many gas-fired power plants are supposed to be built in Germany in the coming years to step in whenever the sun is not shining (which is usually the case at night) and the wind is not blowing. Thus, shrinking gas imports are accompanied by increasing consumption. Prices will likely reach astronomical levels.

The enthusiasm will not be limited to the residents of Hohenmölsen. Anyone connected to district heating systems that already rely on gas due to the energy transition, or that must switch to gas, can look forward to rising prices in the same way.

We can truly be grateful for the competence of the much-loved leaders in Brussels and Berlin. After all, they are doing everything they can to prevent us, the rab… uh… citizens — the sovereign — from living a carefree life in prosperity. The much-loved leaders always know best what is important and right for the rab… uh… citizens. Prosperity, or even merely affordable living costs, definitely isn’t it.

Could federal, state, and regional politicians oppose this and other EU regulations because they intensify the impoverishment of the population?

Of course they could. But they do not, because they simply do not care. Party membership and loyalty to the party line are more important than the well-being of their own voters.

Event notice:
Anyone who would like to take a look at the super-great concept of “Green District Heating” will have the opportunity on March 23, 2026, at 4:00 PM in Consultation Room 1.301 at the District Office in Naumburg, Schönburger Straße 41. During the 9th meeting of the Structural Change Committee, this concept will be presented. The agenda also includes the flagship structural-change projects in the Burgenland district (“status of prioritized projects”) as well as the presentation of the tasks of the Citizens’ Advisory Council for Structural Change in Saxony-Anhalt.
