55 Cents per Liter of Diesel – Hohenmölsen Implements the Fuel Price Cap

The energy revolution in the Saxony-Anhalt town will enter its next phase: After Hohenmölsen was announced as the first CO₂-neutral city in Germany, Mayor Andy Haugk will present the next ambitious project – and once again attract international attention.

"We are going to create something groundbreaking here," Haugk will explain to the assembled press in just a few days. Electricity surpluses that cannot be consumed within the city will no longer be sold but instead used locally to produce synthetic diesel. In doing so, Hohenmölsen addresses both the pressing need of its citizens for affordable mobility and the challenge of storing renewable energy effectively.

Electricity Becomes Diesel

In the upcoming municipal infrastructure, a modern unit for diesel synthesis will be standard: fuel will be produced from clean solar electricity.

19 kWh of electricity are required to produce 1 liter of synthetic diesel.

Thanks to the municipal solar production across roughly 1.2 million square meters of photovoltaic panels, electricity costs amount to only about 2 cents per kWh.

38 cents production cost per liter of diesel – before taxes and a small contribution to the city budget.

"This is a fair price – to the benefit of our citizens and businesses," Haugk will emphasize. In close coordination with the federal government, it has been ensured that no usual taxes will be levied on this municipal diesel. Only VAT is applied, with no energy or CO₂ charges.

Exclusive to Hohenmölsen

The diesel will be reserved solely for residents and local businesses. To prevent abuse, a personalized fuel card will be issued: only those living in Hohenmölsen or its affiliated districts, or whose company is based here, can purchase diesel at the local station for 55 cents per liter.

The Benefits Are Clear:

Affordable city living: Mobility costs for commuters, craftsmen, delivery services, and municipal vehicles drop significantly.

Improved quality of life: Hohenmölsen becomes even more attractive for families and commuters – many are already considering moving here permanently and choosing the regional town for its low cost of living.

Seasonal Production – Strategic Advantage

Diesel production is planned seasonally: production runs from April to early October – during the months of high solar generation. This decision has strategic reasons:

» Easy storage: Unlike hydrogen, synthetic diesel does not require complex pressurization or cooling technology and can be easily stored in regular tanks.

» Backup solution during low-sun periods: Should there be extended periods of low solar input despite high solar capacity, synthetic diesel serves as an emergency reserve for critical vehicles and machinery – an additional contribution to supply security.

"We think pragmatically in terms of solutions, not problems," Haugk will say. "We use our resources to relieve our citizens while making a sustainable contribution to the energy transition. We achieve what others only dream of. We make sure that citizens actually benefit from the energy transition."
