Thank-You Speech from Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz to Donald Trump and Benjamin NetanyahuSome honest words from the much-loved Chancellor of Hearts, Friedrich Merz, right?
Dear President Donald Trump, Dear Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, I address you today with the utmost gratitude – because your recent decisions have, as contradictory as it may sound, helped Germany in ways we could hardly have imagined. Our federal government recently faced enormous financial challenges: expenditures for social services, infrastructure, defense, and many other areas grew relentlessly. Tax revenues, which are supposed to cover these expenditures, have not kept pace with our spending policies. We were thus confronted with a structural problem: spending more money than we earn – a dangerous imbalance that threatens the budget in the long term. Then came your bold, courageous move. The war with Iran that you initiated has a direct impact on energy prices in Germany. Gasoline and diesel prices at our fuel stations have risen sharply. Energy that was previously comparatively cheap now costs significantly more – which leads to two effects: First, every price increase automatically channels additional value-added tax into our coffers. Second, higher energy prices make virtually all other products in the economy more expensive, which also increases VAT revenue. In other words: with every extra cent at the pump, the German federal budget is strengthened considerably. Moreover, another positive side effect becomes apparent: electric vehicle sales, which have so far lacked the hoped-for momentum, could now be boosted by the higher fuel prices. Germans are suddenly reconsidering the switch to electric mobility. In addition, the higher energy burden encourages citizens to save energy, bringing us closer to climate targets – an effect that, objectively speaking, may not have been planned but is certainly welcome. Of course, I am aware: war means suffering. Countless lives are destroyed, families torn apart, livelihoods ruined. Rising living costs also leave deep holes in citizens' wallets. This cannot be sugarcoated – and I must admit, it does sadden me to some extent. But we must also always set priorities and decide what is particularly important for us. Politics in times of crisis also means keeping an eye on the bigger picture. It must ensure the stability of our democracy, keep long-term budgetary goals in mind, and consider the interests of those connected to us, the politicians, as well as our economic and political actions. As our esteemed Federal Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said: “Do not take German claims into account.” This statement has never been as apt and as important as it is in the current situation. That is precisely why it is so important now not to give up prematurely. Every additional day that prices remain high ensures that tax revenues continue to flow robustly. Every extra day strengthens the budget, allows us to finance our spending policy solidly, and encourages citizens to save energy – an effect that benefits us in the long term. Patience in this situation is a strategic advantage that we must not squander lightly. Therefore, I extend my deepest, humblest thanks and respect to you, President Donald Trump, and you, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Your bold, fearless actions will strengthen my national budget, encourage citizens to use energy more consciously, and even promote the future of electric mobility. May this conflict continue for some time so that we can continue to have the opportunity to equip the budget solidly and keep Germany on an economic course. My highest esteem goes to both of you!
